Eshelman Uranus in Libra AA article

Post by Jim Eshelman » Sat Sep 16, 2017 11:30 am

Does anyone have a copy of my Uranus in Libra article from American Astrology? It's not in my collection of AA issues, and I'd like to review it with Jupiter no in Libra opposite Uranus in Aries (aside from wanting to type it up and post it here). I seem to recall it was pretty decent.

The year Uranus went into Libra. Late Nixon? I'm on the road right now and can't look that up. Spring '74?

If it was in 1973-1975, then yes I have it. Now I just have to find which box it's in. Checking... How do you want it? Pdf, txt?

Found it! A further question: How soon do you want it? I've got some things to take care of this evening and tomorrow morning.

BTW, your memory is correct. It was in March 1974.

Cool. Don't interrupt anything that you already had plans to do it, not that much of a rush. Text would be perfect.

Good. I've come to prefer RTF, because it is basic and accommodates the simpler formatting of bold and italics found in the magazine articles.

Mr. E., you should find the article in your email by now.

One thing, it seems to me, should be emphasized, is when you talked about "religious structures": My take at this point is that it's the political structures of religious institutions at issue, not necessarily matters of faith per se. Or, perhaps, differences in faith finding / forcing changes in the institutions. What do you think?

Thank you much for providing this. I've now posted it in this section.

There were certainly politics of it, and I don't have a theoretical reason for why religion per se should be a Libra theme. The article cites historic "religious revolts," which were substantially political. But was passionate Roman Catholic Queen Mary of Tudor's revolt against the Church of England not also a matter of her deep faith? The line is subtle sometimes. Cromwell's "rebellion of England's Puritan Parliament" resembles extreme Christian fundamentalists in the U.S. Congress today - where is the line between their political positions and the sincere religious views of them and their constituents?

I found this paragraph quite interesting to revisit, and it speaks specifically of religious zeal:
Assuming Pope Paul VI still sits on Saint Peter's throne during 1974, he will be faced with some of the greatest problems yet of his rippled and wavy reign. Uranus crossed the Pope's Sun and Moon in modest Virgo a few years back when he had his most troublesome times with innovations within the Church, which occasionally tried to go beyond his concepts of propriety. Now, though, as Uranus firmly establishes itself in Libra in August, the strain may be too much for him. It is very likely the elderly pontiff will abdicate in favor of a younger man who could better stand the current pulls on all sides. Reformation of religious principles as well as a special resurgence in religious zeal could be in the wind.

It was probably youthful folly to suggest a pope would resign - though half a century later, that actually happened. But, in this case, he died four years later and (after a few weeks of Pope John Paul) it opened the way for Pope John Paul II, who very much marked a real resurgence of that zeal, and a powerful surge through the Church (and, while still distinctly conservative as popes usually are, was far more liberal than Paul).

I bit of history on this article BTW: I had written and submitted an article on a 1974 U.S. forecast for the whole year. I don't recall how good it was, except it did center much on the Saturn placements that assaulted Nixon's presidency, and identified late July or early August 1974 as the time this would come to a peak. (He resigned August 9.) For that reason, I was sorry the article was rejected. But I cut out the sections on outer planet sign passages, dug deeper into Uranus in Libra, and wrote this article - fitting some of the other sign-passage pieces into the end of it. There are allusions to some of the conditions that led to his resignation, but not a direct mention of it, in this article.

Anyway... again, many thanks for scanning this for me.

The way I'm thinking about it is riffing on the idea (from Gleadow, I believe) that Libra is a political constellation. It's not the religious aspect per se, but where there is politics, a transit through Libra will affect it.
