Magnitude 6.8. Near Ighil in the Atlas Mountains. Characterized as "devastating" by the media. At least 2,500 deaths (and another 2,500 with injuries). Villages in the Atlas Mountain foothills are in ruins. People in Marrakech slept in the streets through the weekend for safety.

Taglines: "strongest instrumentally recorded earthquake in Morocco" and deadliest Moroccan quake since one that inspired a Garth Allen column in 1960. It is being labelled the Marrakesh-Safi Earthquake.
