Novien calculations

Post by Danica » Tue Jun 23, 2020 2:12 am

This question is for the technical-minded members: how possible (and how complicated, if doable) would it be to make a wheel that shows us the Novien, based off the Navamsha (Vedic: 9th Harmonic) chart that SF gives?

The purpose I need this for is synastry, to be able to easily look up the aspects between a Novien and a 1H Chart.

I gave the method here:

With a one-time quirky setup, it's not hard at all. You do get a stand-alone chart that can be wrapped around another chart etc.

Am I correct in my formulation here?
# shift to 0º Taurus, take 9th harmonic, shift back to 0º Aries, and modulo 360º
def novien( degree )
return (((degree - 30) * 9) + 30) % 360
end

I think you have it right but I wouldn't put it that way (ie no reason to think of anything originating in 0 Aries other than as a math tactic). To state it in a way consistent with the underlying conceot:

Take distance past 0 Taurus.
Multiply by 9 and drop out whole circles (mod 360)
This gives the distance past 0 Taurus

Thanks for confirming and clarifying, Jim.

You wrote in another thread on rim/spoke/hubs:
A 9th harmonic wave, the foundation of the Novien and something that increasingly seems important, may be part of the mathematical structure defining the zodiac because a 40° wave, though going nine times around the zodiac, catches up with itself - laps itself - not every 40° but every 45°. An origin not at 0° Taurus but at 15° Taurus - the inmost center of the Hub - spikes at every 15°00' Hub AND every 0°00' Rim.
I don’t quite get what you mean about lapping itself Avery 45°… could you please expound further?

Every 45°, the Novien position conjoins the zodiac position.

45° x 9 = 405° = 360° + 45°
i.e., a 45° increment in the zodiac (EXACT) is a circle + 45° increment in the Novien.
