Signs of Mental Illness

I have OCD and depression. None of this is new. Based on my natal chart, I think these point to the signs.

My depression probably has to do with the Moon-Neptune and Moon-Mars aspects, considering both Neptune and Mars are malefic.

My son on the 7th house, close to DSC bascically means I don't have the best self-image and need to be with the "right" people who can emotionally support me.

The OCD? Jim points to my massive Sag stellium, and it kind of makes sense for the spoke signs to be obsessive compulsive and, overall, too mental for their own good. My Mercury-Uranus aspect doesn't help too much either.

My Sun is conjunct the Aculeus stars, which astrologers from antiquity connected to afflicted vision, in both the physical and metaphorical sense. My eyes are afflicted in both ways. I am nearsighted, my left eye worse and with other afflictions. And my view of the world tends to be pretty dark.

My natal chart: 18-12-1990, 3:57pm, New York City.

Hi Jove,
One of the first things I learned when studying Sidereal Astrology is to pay great attention to the angles of a natal chart and what planets interact with these natal angles. Angles are the cornerstones for a Sidereal Astrology chart! A direct planetary midpoint involving an angle is very potent and should never be overlooked when working with an AA timed birth chart, imo. You have 3 midpoints involving partile direct planetary midpoints to your natal Asc, and all 3 have Saturn involved. IMO herein lies the true astrological natal symbolism for your depression (Saturn). Below are the 3 planetary combo's partile direct cnj equaling (=) your Asc.

Sat/Ura=Asc -0°18' direct
Mer/Sat=Asc -0°33' direct
Ven/Sat=Asc -0°36' direct

Jove, the new science of Psychedelics is proving high success rates with depression and compulsive disorders at volunteer trials at John Hopkins. Since you are still in NY, I suggest you get with your medical professionals and check out the possibility for them getting you into these clinical trials. Its your choice if you feel you have nothing to lose. I highly recommend you reading the book 'How to Change Your Mind' in order for you to make a more informed choice.

Do you mean "mental illness" which isn't just one thing, or OCD or depression or something else?

For instance, depression is caused by limitations and restrictions the subject perceives on his ability to do what he wants. So that's clearly Saturn. Someone who is consistantly depressed from puberty on would probably show Saturn afflicting Sun, Moon, or angular, or a stellium in Capricorn or Libra. But someone who developed depression suddenly (such as after their school was shot up or post-partum) would more likely be undergoing Saturn progressions or transits. It's also something that can come on top of and mask other things. For instance, narcissists become depressed, often severely, when they're frustrated. That can turn out interesting for the therapist.

Part of the problem is defining our terms. Shall we use the popular idea of depression, or the agreed on diagnosis criteria from the DSM? A lot of people are depressed this morning over the DOW tanking, but I don't think that's what you want to discuss, is it?

Then there are people who believe something like depression is all in the head (a "mental" illness) while there are people (like me) who think depression is mostly (mostly) a physical issue and can be helped by things like Vitamin D, light therapy and regular focused exercise, and therapy comes in with helping the patient repair problems he created because he was depressed. (If you read Freud, he thought most so called mental illness was unrecognized and untreated physical illness.) A Saturn progression can mean struggling with depression, or getting outside and buckling down to do the work of walking several blocks every single day especially when you don't want to.

It's a good topic, although very wide-ranging with a lot of pieces.

I specifically mean both OCD and depression. By depression, I mean the actual disease, not just feeling blue. My OCD began in early February 2007, and has persisted until today. My depression came about in early January 2013 and is still remaining today. I interpret my depression as manifesting because 6 years of grinding with OCD every day eventually wears you down.

Bogdan, have you attempted the simple practices given in Vivekananda's Raja Yoga book? (It's Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, translated by the beloved Swami V., and with his commentaries - detailed elaborations.)

Just a reminder. We don't use houses here because there simply isn't hard evidence they work. It's all anecdotal, and you can use "houses" to find anything in any chart. We try not to drag in other schools of astrology here, since this is the only board on the net people can come to learn this school of astrology.

You're also saying he's had depression from birth and there's nothing he can do about it, when he gave dates when both the OCD and depression began.

This research uses the Krishnamurti ayanamsa. The Krishnamurti ayanamsa is a sidereal zodiac, but not the Sidereal Zodiac which is what we use here. So anyone examining this research be aware! You'll have to convert it to the Sidereal Zodiac.
Although I think the aspects would be the same.
