If a malefic forms an aspect to another planet within 7°-10°, would that planet then be considered afflicted? What if a luminary is being aspected?
If the malefic is part of an aspect configuration, let's say a square to Mercury conjunct Jupiter within 1°, but the square is still within 7°-10°, would we consider the configuration afflicted?
How far does affliction extend? At which point can can we say that the malefics have no power?

That's pretty wide for any aspect. Please see the various threads in the Aspects forum about orbs.sotonye wrote: Wed Sep 05, 2018 1:12 pm If a malefic forms an aspect to another planet within 7°-10°, would that planet then be considered afflicted? What if a luminary is being aspected?
I would never, under any condition, count a square more than 7.5 - it's already off in the unaspected" space between two aspects - and generally don't want to pay attention past 6°. But you have to take all aspects into consideration. For example, if Mercury were conjunct Jupiter within 1° and square Mars at 5°, the Jupiter aspect is hugely more powerful, so the Mercury is fundamentally well aspected. If the malefic is part of an aspect configuration, let's say a square to Mercury conjunct Jupiter within 1°, but the square is still within 7°-10°, would we consider the configuration afflicted?
You seem to be wanting to treat "an affliction" different from "an aspect." There's no difference in the answer. Please see the various threads in the Aspects sections on orbs for lengthy answer (there are perhaps a thousand words written here on the subject, developed in various ways). How far does affliction extend? Okay thank you. Not sure why I thought for a moment that affliction was some sort separate thing with separate rules. And thank you for your example, I was curious whether a planet could still be called well aspected in such a case.Jim Eshelman wrote: Wed Sep 05, 2018 1:18 pm

Yes I thought there might be some difference, I'll read the aspect resources again. You seem to be wanting to treat "an affliction" different from "an aspect." There's no difference in the answer. Re: Orb of Affliction
Think of "affliction" as meaning that the planet has significantly (discernibly) stronger overt malefic influences on it than benefic influences. (Whatever that means in a given setting, based on all the things that come into play.)

Okay perfect. My initial thinking was set in motion by the sense I get when I hear the word. I get the sense of a thing that can't be washed off and that, no matter how small, is evident to everyone.Jim Eshelman wrote: Wed Sep 05, 2018 1:46 pm Think of "affliction" as meaning that the planet has significantly (discernibly) stronger overt malefic influences on it than benefic influences.
