1899 San Ciriaco hurricane

Post by Jim Eshelman »

Landfall August 8, 1899, "late," Guayama, PR [another source says "early"]
Landfall August 18, 1899, "early," Hattaras, NC

To this day, the 1899 San Ciriaco hurricane is the longest-lasting Atlantic hurricane on record, and second longest-lasting in the world, forming August 3, 1899 and dispersing September 12. It struck much of the Caribbean as a Category 4 storm, including Puerto Rico, where it caused far more damage than later, stronger storms. After PR it moved through the Bahamas, then past Florida to make landfall near Hattaras, NC early August 18.

This is important for current news because Ciriaco is the strongest hurricane to make landfall on North Carolina's Outer Banks - not even Florence, this week. - After NC, it headed out to the Atlantic and made one final smack at the Azores before dissipating.

In PR 3,369 people died and 250,000 were left without food or shelter. Communication lines and electricity were almost totally lost. Crops were severely damaged. Damages were about $20 million. Up to that time, it was PR's deadliest, costliest hurricane.

Without an exact time for PR landfall, we could use noon. I think the "late" reference is more credible, but still don't know what that means - and effects of wind were probably felt hours earlier. I'm expecting the partile Saturn-Pluto opposition will figure strongly in the event. - BTW the dormant lunar ingresses (they were all dormant but one!) have key planets just a few degrees off angles as if they were affecting other nearby places but not PR directly.
