I have a harsh relation with my mother too, and have fairly recently decided to do the same thing you did, feeling there is no other way for me to fully and truly process the pain without communicating it to her directly; I could not do it in person, us living on different continents, so skype call served the purpose. She did not really acknowledge and receive what I had to communicate, but I'm glad I did talk.
