Jupiter-Neptune aspects

I'm still not satisfied that I have the right angle on this year's Jupiter-Neptune square. I have it featured prominently in mid-year ingresses (besides the current high-visibility) and my gut doesn't think the standard boilerplate interpretation developed thus far is correct - or, at least, not complete.

I will start by compiling a list of Jupiter-Neptune conjunctions, oppositions, and squares for the last century or so. This can be a starting point on identifying stand-out events and cultural shifts occurring about the same time.

Additionally, there have only been nine times in U.S. history that a Capsolar has had a Jupiter-Neptune conjunction, opposition, or square within tight orbs. Jupiter has been foreground every time and Neptune all but once (sometimes closer, sometimes wider). Here are those 9 years and notes on whether Jupiter and Neptune were CLOSE (C) or WIDE (W) in their angularity. I have bolded the years where they were in aspect and both CLOSELY angular.

In 1792, Jupiter-Neptune in partile conjunction rose for the U.S. capital. The only other main figure in the Capsolar was a Moon-Pluto opposition. Mostly, the young U.S. government was busy get things going. (LOL, the first commonality with this year is that they were trying to get the government operating!) Looking for anything I can recognize as even vaguely compatible with Jupiter-Neptune symbolism, I see:
* The Coinage Act was passed April 2, establishing the U.S. Mint.
* Pres. Washington used the veto power for the first time (on a bill to apportion representatives among the states) April 5.
* The New York Stock Exchange was established by the Buttonwood Agreement May 17.
* Our friends the French started their own revolution, storming the king's palace, mobs slaughtering bishops and priests, abolishing the monarchy permanently 9/21, etc.
* Washington, DC is being built, the cornerstone of what will become the White House was laid 10/13.
* Pres. Washington is re-elected unanimously.

Some of these may have nothing to do with Jupiter-Neptune, except that all of them in the U.S. had to have something to do with Jupiter-Neptune.


In 1796, chart conditions were less pure, i.e., had other elements involved. Neptune rose closely, conjunct Mars about 3° further away. Venus-Jupiter are tightly conjoined on IC (conjunct Moon). Events of note include:
* U.S. and England both ratified the Jay Treaty, avoiding war by reaching agreements on trade and navigation. (As one consequence, U.S. took possession of Detroit.)
* The House demand the State Department provide it documents on the negotiation of the Jay Treaty. Pres. Washington refuses to comply because the Senate, not the House, has jurisdiction over treaties.
* Washington issues his Farewell Address 9/17, declining to run for a third term and warning against partisan politics and foreign entanglements.
* John Adams beat Thomas Jefferson in the presidential election.


In 1875, a Jupiter-Neptune opposition squared Ascendant, but was not the only factor. Saturn is on EP opposite Uranus on WP, and Sun, Mercury, and Pluto are more widely foreground (Mercury closest). It's read it primarily as a Jupiter-Neptune + Saturn-Uranus + Mercury chart. Events of note:
* Congress passed the Civil Rights Act 3/1, outlawing racial discrimination in public accommodations and jury duty.
* The first Roman Catholic cardinal was named in the U.S. (for NY).
* The first Kentucky Derby was held 5/17.
* What is probably the first inter-college football game was played 6/4 (Tufts vs. Harvard). - In general, a LOT of sports are being established, it seems to be catching fire.
* Brigham Young University is founded.
* American Indian Wars were flaring up on Indian Inspector report that hostile Indians are mobilizing against the U.S. under Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse.

Other than the gambling / sporting angle and a few odds and ends, I don't think I'm getting a big enough hit of purely Jupiter-Neptune matters from this. One more year to go.


In 1914, Jupiter-Neptune are opposed across the horizon, Nothing else is strong enough to displace its importance. Notable events include:
* Charlie Chaplin's film career takes off with several films. Other developments in the emerging film industry occur (e.g., name placement above titling).
* Lincoln Memorial construction begins.
* Ludlow Massacre (as one event in the Colorado mining strikes and battles called the Colorado Coalfield War).
* The Tampico Affair bursts open, a brief military excursion of U.S. forces into Mexico that began with U.S. seizing Veracruz & the breakdown of U.S.-Mexican diplomatic relations. - The Mexican Revolution occurs later in the year (I don't remember if they're connected).
* A lot of attention in/by U.S. about staying out of the World War, before and after Franz Ferdinand's murder 6/28.
* U.S. launches it first Super-Dreadnaught class battleship, the USS Nevada.
* NY Stock Exchange is closed 8/1 due to the breakout of war in Europe. It reopens 12/12.
* Panama Canal is opened for business. (This is U.S. territory in Panama.)
* Federal Trade Commission is established 9/26.
* Federal Reserve Bank opens 11/16, a year after its creation.

Now taking a quicker look at charts there the angularity is wider for one or both of them,

In 1783, the American Revolution is still underway, but not for long: On 2/4, Britain formally announced it would cease hostilities. Preliminary articles of peace are ratified by the American congress of the time, the Congress of the Confederation.
* Very celebrations & other adjustments around the end of the war.
* Peace of Paris formalizes the end of the war 9/3.
* By the end of the year, the army is disbanded, Washington resigned his commander-in-chief commission.

In 1824, some important events:
* U.S. War Department created the Bureau of Indian Affair 3/11.
* The most confused presidential election occurred None of the 4 candidates received a majority of electoral votes. Selection of the president was left to the House, which selected a president under the following Capsolar.


In 1882, important events included:
* Polygamy is made a felony under federal law 3/22.
* President Garfield's assassin is executed.
* Congress passed the 1882 Immigration Act, placing various costs and restrictions on immigrants.

Finally, in 1898,
* Spanish-American War begins after USS Maine explodes and sinks in Havana Harbor. War is declared 4/25 and is fought in the Caribbean and the Pacific (Guam, Philippines, annexation of Hawaii). By the time it ends 12/10, U.S. has acquired vast extra-continental territories.
* Trans-Mississippi Exposition World's Fair in Omaha.

Those are the examples of the foreground Capsolar aspects. Now let's go back and see what events occurred immediately around the aspect itself. Here are exact dates of Jupiter-Neptune conjunctions. I won't an absolute boundary, but I'll mostly look at events a week or so either side of exact aspect, plus larger, ore far-reaching events perhaps as much as month out. I'll only include dates for which I find something that might be relevant.

May 22 1907. On 5/13, the 5th Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party convened secretly in London.

Sep 23 1919. American Communist Party established 8/31. The Russian Civil War was underway. A deadly Florida Keys hurricane struck many areas around the Gulf of Mexico 9/10-15. On 9/21, a major steel strike began across the whole U.S. by metal workers trying to organize. Prohibition was enacted by the passage of the Volstead Act over the recently incapacitated Pres. Wilson's veto.

Mar 8 & Apr 20, 1920. The League of Nations of in the process of formation. The League of Women Voters was founded 2/14. Congress refused to ratify the Treaty of Versailles 2/19. Hitler presented his National Socialist Program to the German Workers' Party, which then renamed itself the Nazi Party 2/24. On 3/10, "the world's first peaceful establishment of a social democratic government" occurred in Sweden. Syria declared its independence 3/7. Much League of Nations organizational and definition work around the April conjunction.

Sep 18 1932. In response to a no-confidence vote, Hindenburg dissolved the Reichstag 9/12 and called for new elections. Soviet famine began in which millions starved to death due to forced collectivization. A Social Democratic prime minister was selected in Sweden 9/24.

Sep 22 1945. The War in the Pacific was resolving in the weeks leading up to this, with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 & 9, Japanese surrender negotiations, final surrender 8/14 with signing ceremonies 9/2. The Viet Minh capture of Hanoi 8/30 broke France's hold. Seeds of the Cold War almost immediately sprout. Movement starts (in the midst of all of this) to partition Israel out of Palestine. Approaching the exact day, Typhoon Makurazaki 9/18 killed 3,746 people.

Sep 24 1958. Typhoo Ida kills 1,269 in Japan 9/27. On 9/28, most French voters endorse the constitution for the Fifth Republic.

Feb 1 1971. All in the Family debuts 1/12. On 1/19, 23 countries begin negotiation with OPEC to stabilize oil prices (signed 2/14). Rolls-Royce goes bankrupt 2/4, the same day NASDAQ is founded. Huge cluster of 50 tornadoes across Mississippi and Louisiana 2/20.

May 22 1971. A couple of high-profile hoaxes around this time, not much else.

Sep 16 1971. Louisiana Superdome construction began 8/11. Nixon ended Bretton Woods 8/15 for landmark economic impact. JFK Center for the Performing Arts inaugural performance 9/8. Disney World opens in Orlando 10/1.

Jan 9 1997. Largest strike in South Korean history began 12/26.

May 27 2009. North Korea announced 5/25 it had completed second successful nuclear test. Swine flue outbreak 6/11.

Dec 21 2009. Treaty of Lisbon, amending EU constitution, comes into force 12/1. James Cameron's Avatar premieres (went on to be highest grossing film ever). Devastating 7.0 Haiti earthquake killed ver 300,000 1/12 (started widespread humanitarian relief).

Arnt you forgetting one very very important event that happened under the neptune/jupiter conjunction in 1971?

I for one am very interested in expanding your current definition of this aspect. I know that astrology says that neptune is concidered a malefic planet, but in my heart I feel it is just not really understood or appreciated. I always get an initial happy feeling in my gut when I see Neptune interacting in my chart.

I did so intersting research this past summer on the Hope Diamond and specifically on how blue diamonds are formed. My research started with some thought about Pluto, which does rule tradtional diamond, or shall I say.....severely restricted, bound and compressed carbon.

Blue diamonds are formed under the influence of the properties of water though, with carbon and an added element, which I found to be Jupiter ruled boron. (At least as I recall at this moment it was Jupiter who rules boron)

I believe that for me Jupiter and neptune bring to my character a rich vast and depth that allows me to move joyfully through horrible moments with the understanding that they are only moments, and evrn in horribly painful, confusing, and otherworldly moments, it is transient and just a drop in the vast sea that is my life.

Moving on, here are the Jupiter-Neptune exact oppositions. FWIW, on first pass I see a great deal more volatility and political instability in this list than in the conjunctions.

Jan 7 1901. The first great Texas oil gusher occurred in Beaumont on 1/10.

Jan 9 1914. Pres. Wilson creates the Federal Reserve System as a central banking system 12/23. Ford Motor Company announced an eight-hour workday and a daily minimum wage 1/5.

Apr 17 1926. A lot of political destabilization, power plays, etc. were in force: A Greek dictator won the presidential election 4/4, an assassination attempt on Mussolini 4/7, Manchurian warlord Zhang Zuolin captured Beijing 4/17. These are quite different from the typical periods of this aspect, but might share something more subtle.

Aug 2 1926. Entertainment developments: Fox Film buys the Movietone sound system 7/23, Warner Bros. Vitaphone system premieres 8/5 (with John Barrymore's Don Juan), Rudolph Valentino died 8/23 causing mass grief worldwide. Meanwhile, further political ferocity as in April: A military coup in Portugal 7/9, the Cristero War in central Mexico (religion-based) flared 8/1, a Greek dictatorship was overthrown in a coup 8/22.

Jan 2 1927. Cristero War fully erupts in Mexico 1/1. Lithuanian coup 12/17. American peace keepers respond to Nicaraguan request for assistance in their civil war 12/23, setting up neutral zones. Dynastic change in Japan 12/26. Portugal military rebellion crushed 1/9. In entertainment, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences was created 1/11, Fritz Lang's Metropolis debuted 1/10, first sports commentary on radio 1/15.

Apr 2 1939. Spanish Civil War ends 4/1 with Republic forces' surrender; Franco had assumed power 3/28. The brief Slovak-Hungarian War (begun 3/23) ends 4/4 with Slovakia's surrender. Hitler ordered German military to start planning the invasion of Poland 4/3.

Mar 21 1952. Tornadoes ravage the lower Mississippi River Valley 3/21-22. US Senate ratifies a peace treaty with Japan 3/20. In entertainment, one I Love Lucy episode was the first TV show seen in 10 million homes.

Oct 1 & Nov 14 1989. Nothing worth noting. There is political destabilization of various kinds that distantly echoes other themes already noted. The Loma Prieta earthquake 10/17 is an example of how entertainment sneaks into other news.

(I will use this post as a "working space" to gradually build a gathering of conclusions I think we can draw. I start with things we already know.)

Compelling surreal, unreasoned optimism, often with more show than substance.

Events of powerful inspiration, faith, and idealism.

Belief-driven motivation and decision-making, fueling powerful opposing belief and bigotry.

Excess, over-abundance, immoderation, glut.

Also, a lot of events, hard to categorize, that represent political instability and rearrangement. This comes in so many forms that I think it is a different form of the same basic themes, especially of hope motivating people to make big moves + flamboyant negotiation and general drama. Among these are Hitler ordering the planning of the Poland invasion; U.S. first ground troops in Vietnam or sending troops to Nicaragua to protect U.S. interests; civil wars in Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Spain; and diverse instances of conflict and turmoil between nations. Also a few scandals, such as the Zimmerman affair or Iran-Contra scandal.

NASDAQ founded.

My starting interpretation of Jupiter-Neptune aspects in mundane astrology was:

Events of powerful inspiration, faith, and idealism. Compelling surreal, unreasoned optimism, often with more show than substance. Belief-driven motivation and decision-making, fueling powerful opposing belief and bigotry. Excess, over-abundance, immoderation, glut. Entertainment themes (box office bonanzas, record-breaking movie attendance). For events that are not fun, festive, or celebratory, it typically signals an entertainment-themed setting.

Attempting to break this down to its most fundamental ideas:

I've previously summarized the Jupiter-Neptune principle as social idealism, faith & belief, unreasoning optimism. To say this differently, I continue to find myself reducing Jupiter-Neptune events to the two basic roots of unreasoned optimism and show business. Faith is just a synonym for "unreasoned optimism." (Notice I'm not saying unreasonable optimism, just unreasoned - it's based on something other than reason, which is pretty much the definition of faith.)

Social idealism and hope are expressions of the optimism. However, they start to touch on another theme I've uncovered in the above research: There is a strong theme of collectivism operating through Jupiter-Neptune. I think this is just a place where their principles overlap: Neptune is itself collective in the sense of our interconnectedness (arising from the womb experience: see Kid Gloves). Jupiter is fundamental social, oriented to community (a Jupiter basic that comes from the family or tribe sense). Overlap Jupiter and Neptune and you get social collectivism, a sureness that we are better off (and more likely to prosper) together than alone.

One might summarize Jupiter-Neptune aspects by saying they are quite non-Saturnian. Almost everything you can say about Jupiter-Neptune is contrary to the nature of Saturn. This communalism or collectivism - the sense that we will prosper better together - is the opposite of Saturn's commitment to immediate survival, especially for itself, with everyone needing to take care of themselves.

We see this in the examples above, especially with events that were formative of Soviet communism itself (an extreme form of this) and the formation and leveraging of labor unions. There is a recurring theme of socialism from mild to extreme forms, and quite a few labor strikes, along with other social bonding. Bonding together for humanitarian actions is another variation.

We see the same themes of community among nations. International leagues, communities, and "treaty organizations" are formed. International affiliation and alliance is in the news but not individual alliances so much as communities of nations. Therefore, we usually see diplomacy succeed: a Cuba-USSR trade pack, the Japanese surrender ending WW II, the Oslo Accords, and numerous other examples of diplomacy and treaties. There are, however, two stark examples of diplomats succeeding and then the U.S. Congress rejecting their results.

Civil rights themes are quite numerous, primarily in binding people together in community to stand for collective prospering and collective well-being over divisiveness. Among such events, we find the three Selma marches; the Civil Rights Act abolishing racial segregation; the Fair Housing Act; college student collective protests and other activism against the Vietnam War; Martin Luther King's "mountain top" speech, and then national protests days later after his murder; Thurgood Marshall's confirmation as the first black Supreme Court justice; and the final destruction of the Berlin Wall.

There is also the reaction stirred against these actions, such as the community resistance against the Selma marches, King's murder, other civil rights worker murders, the conservative activism that overthrew Miami's gay rights laws, and the mobilization of intensified police or military resistance (in America, South Korea, and other places) against student protests.

Another place the unreasoned optimism plays is in finance, where the aspect is well-known to be inflationary and fuel investment (gambling), even to the formation of unsustainable market gains. Market optimism might be a suitable summary phase. Upsurge periods in the stock market included the first time the DJIA closed above its pre-crash 1929 top and the market tops just before the dot-com bust. Jupiter-Neptune aspects have marked the creation of NASDAQ and the Federal Reserve (also showing a bias toward collectivism in banking), occasions to propel investment like the first great Texas oil gusher, Nixon's ending of Bretton Woods, and the publication of the economic theories of Keynes. I take this broadly as a favoring of speculation.

Another event category includes many cases of removal of leaders. Many events share this one characteristic, but are quite different in details. Some are the consequence of activism, of the collective opposing an individual (but not many). Some have scandal or something similar (but not many). I think the most common element is disillusionment, a direct result of the unreasoned optimism (since sometimes that optimism is ill-placed), and this might be the best commonality. These events ae as mild as no-confidence votes and as extreme as revolutions, coups, and assassination attempts (a lot of coups!). LBJ decided not to seek reelection when he knew he couldn't win. Jimmy Carter lost much of the nation's confidence over the Iran hostage crisis. There is usually a sense of failed leadership, but I think this is just the form that disillusionment takes.

Of course there are many examples of religious themed events. Joseph Smith announced the Second Manifesto of the Mormon church mere days before Aleister Crowley received the channeled dispensation for his religion. Various Vatican events are on the list, and events that occurred during religious pilgrimage. Several events around he beginning and furthering of the Cristero War in Mexico, which was a rebellion of Catholics over secular laws.

There is a space travel side theme. I think this is fantasy mixed with futurism but, broadly, it seems to have a life of its own. Besides some critical NASA events, the discovery of gravitational waves, and key breakthroughs in animal cloning, some of the great film successes under this aspect have been important sci-fi landmarks (Fritz Lang's Metropolis, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Avatar; even Space Mountain at Disneyland). Entertainment is a primary theme of its own, the "show business" root idea of Jupiter-Neptune I mentioned above - fantasy + theater. Many events that were primarily something else (e.g., fires, murders) occur in a theater or church setting when Jupiter-Neptune is present. Warner Brothers Pictures, Walt Disney Company, Disney World in Orlando, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, and Nickelodeon all began under this aspect. Entertainment companies invested in major new film technology. The first Academy Awards and first Emmy Awards were held. Major Broadway and film productions launched, including many productions that, in their time, were the biggest financial successes ever.

Finally, there are weather themes. Jupiter-Neptune is the distinctive aspect of tornadoes, and the lists above identified several major tornado outbreaks. The existence of this aspect in space seems to indicate tornado proneness all by itself. There are a few instances of related phenomena (floods, even hurricanes) with Jupiter-Neptune prominence, but tornadoes are the main focus.

With the idea of entertainment themes, the role of social media platforms has boomed an industry devoted to creating "Memes" and mass group sharing of a point of view espousing an ideal, some very positive yet too many "fake news" propaganda and unvettable new sources. In a way it has given the individual a safe platform to showcase thier own perspective to a select group of friends and family.
The amount of lies and defamation being spread via these social media platforms is outrageous. There seems to be a diminished desire to fact check a source of infornation, instead these meme are taken as true and current with no accountability.
What was at first created to be a way to bring people closer and allow them to grow closer has in many ways fueled a deeper division and strengthen forms of hatred fear bigitry and intolerance.
