Hurricane Janet

Post by Jim Eshelman »

September 28, 1955, 12:00 PM CST (17:00 UT), Chetumal, Mexico

Category 5 with peak winds of 175 mph. It made landfall just east of Chetumal, Mexico. Landfall is described as "between Corozal Town, British Honduras, and Chetumal, Mexico," which are close together; given the damage, I think Chetumal (the district capital) should be used.

The first named hurricane to cause over 1,000 deaths, with over 1,023 fatalities directly attributed and $65.8 million in damages.
