Monte Toc, Italy's "walking mountain," has long been known for landslides. On the above date, 250 million cubic meters of rock slid down its surface into the Vajont Dam reservoir, creating a tsunami 250 meters high that wiped Longarone (46N16, 12E18) and adjacent towns.
1,918 died (1,450 of them in Longarone). Calculations below are for Longarone. The landslide occurred as Moon, exactly on the ecliptic, crossed the eastern horizon so there probably was a gravitational contribution.
NOTE: I want to use this in the book. It's not only an excellent example, it's also a large-impact event that deserves to be there. The problem is, I don't know how to categorize it. The real event is a landslide, and we don't have a category for that. The charts look most like an earthquake and not at all like a flood, and the cause was something like an earthquake even though the real event was a flood resembling those caused by other dam overflows. It isn't a firm structural collapse - the dam held up and the water pi]bounced over the top of the dam, but it's kinda sorta like a structural failure because that's what a landslide is. So... for now, until I get clearer on this, I'm going to let it sit here.[/i]
