Hurricane Dorian

Post by Jim Eshelman »

September 1, 2019, 16:40 UT, Elbow Cay, Great Abaco Island, Bahamas (26N32, 76W58)

Hurricane Dorian peaked at Category 5 with one-minute sustained winds of 185 mph at the time of its first landfall, which occurred in Elbow Cay, Great Abaco Island, Bahamas. We have few detailed reports so far - surely an indication that electricity and communication channels are flattened on the island - but it appears that this strike has caused massive destruction as the Category 5 designation suggests. Flooding has now begun, with Grand Bahama International Airport underwater as of 7:00 UT today (9/2).

A second landfall was made September 2, 2:00 UT, on Grand Bahama Island. Dorian has since weakened to Category 4. UPDATE 9/3: The storm has mostly sat on top of Grand Bahama Island since it hit, at least for a day and a half. The Grand Bahama Airport is under 6 feet of water. It is now the worst natural disaster in the history of the Bahamas.

In the wake of extensive flooding, five people have died so far. The story of this hurricane is likely far from over, but we can study its first landfall.

UPDATE 10/17/19: Death toll is 63 direct, 7 indirect (nearly all in the Bahamas) with damages of $8.28 billion. "The resultant damage to these islands was catastrophic, most structures were flattened or swept to sea, and at least 70,000 people were left homeless" (Wikipedia).

September 6, 2019, 8:35 AM, Cape Hattaras, Outer Banks, NC

Dorian made landfall an hour and a half ago on the Outer Banks, at 8:35 AM according to NY Times. (My original prediction of where would have much more accurate if those damn islands weren't in the way :).) It was Category 1 when it struck.
