Two truck bombings, one of which caused most damage when it fled pursuit and exploded impacting a hotel (triggering another explosion in a fuel tanker parked nearby, "creating a massive fireball"). (The second blast, about two hours later, only killed two people.) Altogether, 587 people died; another 316 were injured. Al-Shabaab is believed (from witnesses) to have been responsible, though they didn't claim credit.

This is Africa's deadliest attack ever. Some contemporary reports called it "Africa's 9/11."

I finally found the time of day on GardaWorld. It is consistent with other references to "the middle of the day," and contradicts the New York Times report that the explosion "shattered the night." The time places Saturn near IC and a nearly partile Mars-Saturn square generally near the angles.
