Great Fire of New York (1845)

Post by Jim Eshelman »

July 19, 1845, about 3:45 AM, New York, NY

Fire broke out in a whale oil and candle manufacturing establishment in Lower Manhattan, then spread quickly through predominantly wooden buildings. When it reached a warehouse on Broad Street storing saltpeter, "a massive explosion" resulted, feeding the fire further, flattening six to eight adjacent buildings, smashing in the fronts of houses across the street, set the entire neighborhood aflame, and blew out windows a mile away.

The fire started at 2:30 AM. Fire alarms sounded half an hour later. The warehouse explosion was between 3:30 and 4:00 AM (and probably is the most interesting event, the time to use). The fire was contained by 1:00 PM. 26 deaths occurred, all firefighters and other volunteers battling the conflagration. Great destruction occurred across the modern Financial District, causing $5-$10 million in damages

I'll study this for 3:45 AM, the approximate time of the explosion.
