Angular Mars project

Post by Jim Eshelman »

Welcome to the Angular Mars discussion project, which will run February 27-March 13, 2021 (and then will remain around in case people want to revisit it in the future). Please gather your list of Mars Angular people (especially those you know personally) and join us.

CRITERA: Let's stick to planets within 7° of major angles (Asc-Dsc, MC-IC) and 2° of minor angles (Zenith-Nadir, EP-WP). Ideally (i.e., if you can), please assess proximity to horizon and meridian in prime vertical longitude, squares to MC and Asc in longitude, and RA contact to EP and WP in right ascension.

Here is the primary Angular Mars interpretive resource on the forum (which I've been in the middle of rewriting for sometime, interrupted):
viewtopic.php?f=15&t=38#p186

We may also want to compare to Sun in Scorpio and Capricorn for ideas to check against our Angular Mars examples:
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=35#p162
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=35#p164

My current concise summary of Angular Mars (always subject to change) reads:
Aggressive, competitive, challenging, needs to win (combative, quarrelsome). Seeks to test and prove self by contest (e.g., competitively, verbally, mentally, sexually). Courage (physical and moral; may disregard safety). Dominates and controls others. Physical, needs to expend energy; needs physical and psychological elbowroom. Sexually aggressive, needs frequent satisfaction. Business leadership and competitive excellence.

Angular Mars is extremely common on this site (perhaps explaining why we have often boisterous engagements). People who are or have been active on this forum with Mars angular include:
  • By Jove
  • FlorencedeZ
  • James Condor
  • Mike
  • Mikestar13
  • sotonye
  • StarAgeWiz
  • Teresa Hamilton
  • Venus Daily
Some famous people with Mars angular:
  • Pres. George Washington, Pres. James Monroe, Pres. Andrew Johnson, Pres. Herbert Hoover, Pres. Franklin Roosevelt, Pres. Dwight Eisenhower, Pres. Lyndon Johnson, Pres. Gerald Ford, Pres. Bill Clinton, Pres. Donald Trump, Queen Mary I, King George III, Queen Elizabeth II, Sec. Pete Buttigieg, Dir. J. Edgar Hoover
  • Fritz Haarmann, Winnie Ruth Judd, John Wayne Gacey, Dan White, James Holmes
  • Sir John Dee, Dane Rudhyar, Israel Regardie, Manly Palmer Hall, Tony Joseph
  • Malcom X, John Lennon, JonBenet Ramsey, Patty Hearst
  • Henry Ford, Heidi Fleiss, Valerie Harper, Lady Gaga
The number of presidents (including two who were the nation's highest-ranking generals) is noteworthy, as is the remarkable list of murderers (and a few that were victims of violence), showing how the different flavors of a planet can express. (There are also two noteworthy pacifists.)

Besides the famous people listed above, I have a list of 32 people I knew/know sufficiently well with Mars angular by the above criteria. I'll recheck everything against these 32. (Some of those I personally knew [all not deceased] overlap with the famous: Dane Rudhyar, Israel Regardie, Tony Joseph, Valerie Harper, and Manly Palmer Hall.) Most are private acquaintances, including my wife, father, sister-in-law, and ex-wife.

Half the angular Mars presidents had it rising: Both Johnsons, Clinton, Ford, and Trump. They are all quite good examples of the planet (remembering that Ford was a star football player). We also find murders Dan White, Fritz Haarmann, and Winnie Ruth Judd and (joining Trump) aggressive business figures Henry Ford and Heidi Fleiss. There is clearly much ferocious, aggressive, competitive, confident action (and often physicality) with this Mars rising group.

Mars setting feels different. We still have a couple of presidents (both with strong military careers and one murderer, but also victims of violence. Some of them seem to be in denial of (or actively resisting) the Mars expression, wanting peace or actively ambivalent. This may be too few examples to generalize (so this isn't a "Mars setting" interpretation, just thinking aloud). Examples, in addition to Pres/Gen Washington and Monroe and murderer Gacey include John Lennon, Malcolm X, Lady Gaga, and others.

Mars on MC, among the famous, shows three strong, commanding, willful leaders: Pres. Roosevelt, Pres/Gen Eisenhower, and England's King George III. In contrast, Mars on IC has some of the same flavor but (like Descendant) some weakness (on the one hand) or passive expression (on the other) comes in: Pres. Hoover (who couldn't contain the Great Depression, in contrast to FDR who could). Patty Hearts (who ended up toting a gun but was mostly a victim). Throw in murderer James Holmes and the highly effective, dominating (but covert, behind the scenes) longtime director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, and (with another form of covertness) occultist Israel Regardie.

The minor angles have no particular distinction I can see (and there aren't many). How Mars shows for each is unique to the person, no real commonalities. Incorporating personal cases (not merely the famous) I have many more examples and there does seem a similar EP-WP contrast to what Asc-Dsc and MC-IC have shown, where WP often (not always) has more containment or reticence, or something along those lines. For example, Mars on EP includes a confrontational-toned physical trainer and an aggressive macho gay activist from back in the 'take the fight to the streets at night' days, while some examples of Mars on WP includes two highly accomplished, effective women who, however, prefer a softer personal style. (I suppose I could include the porn actress I know with Mars on WP, whose roles are clearly physical but favoring very passive parts.)

Tentatively: There may be a distinction between (what we might call) the active and passive poles of each angular axis in natal astrology, where Mars needs are equally strong across all angles but the active end (Asc, MC, EP, maybe Z) has a more active identification and forthright, "in your face" expression, while the passive end (Dsc, IC, WP, maybe N) has less identification (maybe active disidentification), containment (with the IC: covert, hidden) as a layer. Just thinking aloud...

The idea of sublime and active (bass vs tweeter, male vs female) already exist within planets, it wouldn't be too far off to have angles (that activity chance he frequency of planets) to being more apparent- but we never discussed truly what they actually look like as how they hit the planets (which is why it's entirely probable that we see Mars the easiest, because it is a force in itself [too me sometimes Mars makes peoples planets look or act almost angular under the right circumstances].)

In my own chart my Sun would be an expression of my Uranus freedom and truth needs (Bass angles). Where as I have internal "covert" angles to find change(Eris') and improvement(Jupiter)(Tweeter angles).

(Eris is a good side by side to Mars, the "Chaos" I cause is often sublime, unintentional - and sometimes even unnoticed, versus the very dynamic types which have it on more expressive angles. This is also easily seen in Mars type people as well..)

I have finished the rewrite of the Mars Foreground description, which can be found here:
viewtopic.php?f=15&t=38#p186

My new concise summary of foreground Mars is as follows, with the three new keywords for the summary:
Courage. Independence. Aggression. Independent, determined, persevering, self-willed. Aggressive, challenging, needs to win (combative, quarrelsome). On the go, needs to burn energy, impulsive (strong and untiring when young). Courage (physical and moral: forthright, outspoken, argumentative). Dominates, commands. Business leadership, competitive excellence. Strong sexual drives need frequent satisfaction.

I was reflecting today how we can certainly, for all practical intents and purposes, term the places where our natal Mars is sharply on Angle as (our own, unique versions of it) *Hell on Earth*,
and locations where Venus or Jupiter , or both, come as the partile, or simply strongest angularity, as “Heaven on Earth”.

And then it hit me!:
When it comes to the rx angular Mars people, it’s Hell on Earth at every location, naturally so- for they bring their Mars with them, wherever they go!

Sorry I'm so late to the game, but I am also an Angular Mars person, with Mars 1d24m from the MC of my birthchart. It is also within 2d of a perfect square from the AS, and consequently very close to the Zenith.
I think it should be mentioned that I studied Martial Arts for years and am (at least according to my friends and family) a very capable chef (Knives and fire, you know). Interestingly, my Sun and Moon are Virgo and Libra, like Dwight Eisenhower, who I remember from TV when I was a toddler, and didn't know until I was an adult, came out against the military-industrial complex. I have a hard time with authority and office politics, and have been doing professional Astrology for over 40 years at this point, by way of an introduction.

I'll be around this forum for quite a while, since I was doing Sidereal before there were computer programs to work with. Sidereal was my first style, (I learned from A.A.Mag and Bradley/Fagan etc. writings). I traveled with a Michelsen Ephemeris and a programmable calculator for years (yes, I know the Spherical trig and the rest of the math).

Anyway, hi to all Mars-Angular people, glad to be in the forum.

I definitely fit JEs summary of Angular Mars. All three of his words-Courage, Independent, aggression (impulsive, impatient, argumentative) Even in combination with everything in my chart, it’s pretty clear cut and evident.
Once I moved out the nest at 19, these traits exploded.
People know I’m aggressive, especially the last few years. My courage has been noted many times. Some people fear it, like I’m making a mistake! Like it’s too much and too risky.
I’ve been more assertive the last few years, meeting new people. Many Gen Xers have called me out for being aggressive. I use Gen X as the example because they seem to have pegged me. Some other people have tried to push me into doubting my aggression. The thing is, I was so heavily medicated that my aggression was suppressed. Once I changed medication, the aggression came out heavily (misdiagnosed!) And or on psycho active drugs(which I stopped doing)
My aggression is way too high on psilocybin and TCH. I don’t recommend anyone to do drugs!!!!
Alcohol actually helps my aggression (but I don’t drink anymore)
I’ve never been a physical harm to myself or others. Meditation, breathing exercises and martial arts really is key!!!
