A 17-hour prison riot broke out when two rival gangs warred over control of drug traffic inside the prison. 56 people died, 6 of them decapitated in the process.

This began January 1, in the afternoon, at the Anisio Jobim Prison Complex in Manaus, Brazil. As a sidebar, in another prison in the same city, dozens of prisons executed a prison-break at the same time. Absent a clear time that this started, I'll use 3:00 PM.

THE CAPSOLAR for Manaus has Mars 0°17' from Descendant, so major acts of aggression and violence are unsurprising. (No other solar ingress has been live for that location in the last year.)

The new CAPLUNAR has Sun and Mercury straddling Ascendant (Mercury closer). It doesn't seem overly connected to the event and, if it is at all, then it shows the planning and strategic execution.

Since last we checked in, we have new Moon aspects to consider. Transiting Jupiter now opposes CapQ Moon, and was applying by 0°37' when this break occurred. As this progressed Moon is still square progressed (0°42') and ingress (0°32') Mercury (which Jupiter also squares), this seems more a business deal than anything else. Its connection to the event is undoubted: CapQ MC was 27° Sagittarius, touching all these planets (and still in orb for "break" planet, transiting Uranus).

On the flip side of symbolism (and appropriate for the decapitations and other deaths), transiting Saturn conjoined Cansolar Moon 0°07' (It's in Scorpio, which Fagan frequently reminded us rules the neck and is related to decapitations.) Transiting Sun square Cansolar Ascendant is the only other daily factor.

January 2, one of the busiest travel days of the year, the U.S. Customs computer system went down for several hours, locking thousands of people in place (primarily people returning to the U.S. after the holidays).

The outage was 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM EST. Probably Washington is the best location to use - East Coast was especially hit, the affected systems are with a Washington-centered agency, and it was a national event - but the main indication is location-independent: Transiting Saturn conjoins Cansolar Moon (0°15'). OTOH, it is contrary to the spirit of Jupiter's transit to the CapQ progressed Moon-Mercury squares.

The new CAPLUNAR is bad enough to be blamed for anything, so I should mention it here. (It's one of those Mars-Saturn-Neptune triple monsters.)

Transiting Pluto conjoins Capsolar MC (0°14'), and Uranus transits EP (0°32'), but these are probably telling a much bigger story than this few hours of inconvenience. (They're telling the story of the overthrow of the U.S. government; but that's for another post.)

The best sign of the massive inconvenience and frustration people surely felt was transiting Mars conjunct Cansolar Neptune and square Cansolar Saturn, all on CanQ angles.

With aspects that day - the Mars-Saturn hitting both Hillary and Trump charts intimately - I'm a little concerned with the possibility of a bomb under their seats, or at least a cat fight.

A shooting at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport by a lone shooter has resulted in perhaps 5 deaths, depending on which report you read. A suspect is in custody. Flights are suspended while the crime is investigated. Here is the first version of a Wikipedia page:

Shots were first reported shortly before 1:00 PM, apparently at about 12:55 PM (the latter time being the current summation given by Wikipedia).

Right now (2:35 PM) people are running away from a terminal, with officers entering it with guns drawn and people are being brought over to a line of cars and told to get down and hide behind them. About 2:40 PM a reporter said he was told additional shots were fired and fire trucks are approaching.

The first shooter may have been a distraction to let a group get into position to do more.

Whatever, the situation is very much in flux. People were re-entering the terminal to be rescreened for their flights.

Yesterday in Orlando, in only peripherally related events, a police officer and a sheriff were killed - on what happened to be Law Enforcement Officer Appreciation Day.

Anything particularly hitting Orlando hard?

Well, yeah, there is. Florida is getting it bad this month, with the Mars-Neptune conjunction rising in the Caplunar (Mars 9' above, Neptune 34' below), and Saturn more widely on MC. The Arilunar seems way better, with Moon and Jupiter-Uranus along the meridian, but also has a foreground 0°00' Sun-Pluto mundane conjunction.

Then, yesterday, CapQ Ascendant hit 20° Pisces, square ingress Pluto, and within orb of the square of transiting Pluto to ingress Uranus (while transiting Uranus remains 0°24' from Capsolar Ascendant). CanQ Ascendant hit 21° Leo, exactly opposite transiting Mars.

So, yeah, this was a shocking, severe, and painful day for Orlando.

It's been really difficult to track events this month. So much is happening in the transient news sense - data blurring by, partial answers, ongoing stories, and generally stuff that makes you think that the news of the moment isn't the real story, that we need to wait for the real story to sharpen up.

But just maybe this trivia barrage with recurrent streams and themes and an underlying, intensifying upset is the current story.

Just sayin'.

Obama pardoned former Marine General James Cartwright, who was convicted of making false statements to federal investigators while they investigated whether he leaked details of a cyberattack on Iran’s nuclear program. Cartwright plead guilty in October, and prosecutors have requested a two-year prison sentence.

Though it wasn't a hard prediction to make, I probably should remind that this is what the Canlunar forecast said (all very straightforward, by the book predicting):

The Canlunar for January 12-19 covers the last week of the Obama administration. Mercury is on MC. Moon precisely (0°04') opposes Sun and also squares Jupiter. Mercury's focus suggests much last minute business of the paperwork variety. With the strong solar focus, expect many presidential orders, both administrative directives and, especially, acts of clemency, for there is much clemency in Sun-Jupiter's link to Moon.

Italy has had a lot of earthquakes lately, and they're hitting in clusters. Yesterday, central Italy had at least 10 quakes, four of which were magnitude 5 or higher. They were scattered a bit, but the big, most measurable hit was in one ski area where an avalanche buried an entire hotel (but for its top floor or two) under snow, trapping everyone inside (and, of course, with the possibility of casualties: so far, one death reported).

First, here are the Italy quake times and places I find for quakes at least M5. Note that Amatrice is the same town that was essentially destroyed in the last round of quakes. All are for January 18, 2017.

The avalanche hit Hotel Rigopiano at the foot of the Gran Sasso mountain, which looks like it's in Abruzzo. A little digging discloses that the hotel is in Farindola. I can't find a time, except that NY Times says it occurred "after four earthquakes struck the region." If that's literally true, then it was after 13:33 UT. I'll use 14:00 UT for now.

For the avalanche / hotel smothering, we get the following. Gran Sasso is at 42N28 13E33.

CAPSOLAR. Jupiter on EP (1°23'), Uranus on Dsc (2°44'), slightly wider Sun and Pluto angularities. Aspects include Sun-Jupiter (19'), Sun-Uranus (< 2°), Jupiter-Uranus (< 2°), Su/Pl on IC (16'). Complicated and imperfect... though the region, for over a century, has a number of Jupiter-dominant quakes that seem off until they're all looked at together. We see a tumble of other implications here - the Uranus (and sliver of Pluto) for the disturbance, marks of luxury environment, etc.

CAPLUNAR. Saturn on WP 0°07'. Pluto 5° above Dsc, Sun-Mercury 3-4° below, so this time it's the Me/Pl midpoint on the angle (31'). Much more obvious! - Saturn was the obvious malefic both for the destruction and hardship and, frankly, the cold.

CANLUNAR. And the hits just keep on coming, as they say! Ignore the fine points for a moment, and just look at this list.'
22° 22' Sag Pluto (3°10' Dsc)
25°40' Pis Uranus
26°42' Gem Asc
27°13' Vir Jupiter
27°39' Sag Sun (0°53' Dsc)
Also, Moo rises, about 5° below Asc. ecliptically opposite Sun and square Jupiter.

DAILY TIMING. CapQ Asc is 25° Virgo, opposite Uranus. MC 29° Gemini opposes ingress Sun. this is in the context of Uranus already on the Capsolar Dsc, and of transiting Uranus (which hasn't had time to move much_ only 09' from Capsolar Dsc. The CapQ snapped it into place.

Meanwhile, transiting Mars exactly conjoined (12') Cansolar Midheaven for Gran Sasso!

At 5:30 PM local time in Farindola, Abruzzo, Italy, earthquakes that evening spawned an avalanche which hit the four-star Hotel Rigopiano. Around 30 people are missing. All guests and staff had gathered on the main floor in preparation for being evacuated, except a couple people who'd gone outside. The building was moved off it's foundation and over 30 feet down the mountain.

Someone calling from inside the hotel was not believed by emergency response. Two people outside the hotel survived, and one person apparently was rescued from inside. Emergency response wasn't able to reach the hotel till 4:30 AM because the roads were blocked.

Four people confirmed dead but searchers have been finding pockets of air with survivors since early this morning, including all four children known to be inside when the avalanche hit. They pulled out another four people as night fell, and know of at least six more survivors they haven't yet been able to reach.

Numerous mass protests have been done (and are still going on quite vehemently, by youths and youngsters mostly) in support for the lifting of India's Supreme Court's ban on conducting the folk sport "jallikattu" (a traditional bull-taming sport practised by Tamils especially on the second day of the Tamil month of Thai [Sun in Vedic Capricorn], after the celebration of Pongal which is on the 1st day of that month).

Most of the protests are against PETA India (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, based in Norfolk, Virginia) as well, as they were involved in the process of banning the traditional sport. There are some rumours and allegations that PETA had the backing of foreign corporations who were interested in eliminating the native cattle breed used for jallikattu, so that they could bring in foreign breeds like the jersey bulls.

In the protests, strong themes of preserving Tamil culture and tradition, and the being against of foreign organisations in local matters are seen.

Protests of smaller scales are being held in places like the Indian embassies of St.Louis, Missouri, Ireland, London and even here in Malaysia in support of lifting the jallikattu ban. Of course, it's mostly Indian nationals who're involved in the smaller protests, not ethnic Indians who've been born and lived there.

Looking at the current Capsolar for Chennai (Tamil Nadu's captial, as this is mostly a state event, Solar Fire still uses its former name, Madras) it has Saturn rising.
Chennai's Canlunar has Venus-Neptune setting partile for intense devotion and passionate belief, and more accurately has that Moon-Jupiter-Sun t-square for racial togetherness and the highlight of the government.
It looks like the protests won't stop soon as Chennai's new Liblunar has a Jupiter-Uranus opposition on the MC-IC axis (with Jupiter partile on IC) and also Moon partile on Nadir representing the powerful response from the people of Tamil Nadu. New Delhi's Liblunar has Sun-Jupiter-Uranus on the angles with Moon also on Nadir.

Personally speaking, I'm not that particularly moved by the protests despite being ethnically a fairly proud Tamil myself. Jallikattu is mostly a Martial sport, showing courage and manliness without showing much mercy to the angry bull that is to be tamed. Sometimes the bull gets too violent and hence people get killed by the sport. If the bull gets out of control, sometimes the bull gets killed in efforts of controlling it. Not to mention that killing a bull/cow is a major sin in Hindusim!

But I don't think I should have a say on this in the first place as I'm not nationally an Indian, and ethnic Indians here don't play Jallikattu in Malaysia.

Protests in Washington, primarily by antifascist groups, turned violent, with smashed windows in retail outlets, fires started, police unleashed against the crowds. They threw rocks and other threats at the inauguration parade. Almost 100 people were arrested in the first wave.

Like we've been saying for over a year about this Mars-Saturn...

500,000 in DC, 400,000 in NYC, 300,000 in Chicago just for starters.
There were crowds marching in major cities world-wide.
Huge crowds with no violence. Police here in Omaha were clearly surprised.

Trump thought it was all about him.

Destructive weather covered most of the country over the weekend, including a swath of at least 41 tornadoes through the southeast (Louisiana through South Carolina) and at least 19 deaths. One result of this spread-out "event" was in Mississippi, where four people died when a 136 mph tornado sliced through them. (Another report said its winds reached as high as 165 mph at times.)

This event is listed as Petal, MS, with the deaths occurring "before dawn" on Saturday, January 21. Petal and adjacent Hattiesberg were badly hit.

Dawn was at 6:54 AM in Petal, so I'll use 6:30 AM as a close estimate of the time.

THE CAPSOLAR for Petal is complex. Jupiter, 23' from square Ascendant, is closest. We also get Uranus square Ascendant (the Jupiter-Uranus opposition), and Sun and Pluto a little wider from Descendant.

THE CAPLUNAR has a near-partile Mars-Neptune conjunction square Midheaven - pure terror. However, the closest planet is Venus, only 0°05' from Ascendant. (But the Mars-Neptune is close, too! Neptune square MC is only 12'.)

THE LIBLUNARA has Sun precisely on EP and Pluto in the degree of Ascendant.

The day is no mystery at all. CapQ has Uranus on MC, without having Jupiter on the opposing angle. Pluto is on WP. This is "bring down the houses" stuff.

What about Trump recently announcing orders to reduce or halt refugees and build the wall. I don't think it's a coincidence with Saturn so close to entering Sagittarius.

SATURN. Inhibiting, withdrawn. Marks the self-preservation instinct, including the drive to work hard and guard what is one's own. Guilt-conscious (including conscience) and can lead to self-imposed trials. Saturn limits and restrains what it touches. An element of conservatism and frugality.

With Saturn entering Sagittarius, it seems as if Trump may be dead serious about this recent announcement.

At least six are dead and eight wounded following gunfire (apparently by two shooters) in a Quebec mosque "during Sunday night prayers," about 8:00 PM. It is described as a "coordinated attack," which I take to be a military-style assault that is surely a terrorist assault.

Quebec's CAPSOLAR has Sun exactly on WP (partile), square a barely-foreground Jupiter. The CAPLUNAR is similar, with Sun just under 2° from WP and nothing else angular (and Moon square Jupiter). Finally, transiting Sun is on WP of the CapQ (0°04'), since Sun and the angle have moved at about the same pace since the Capsolar occurred.

We have to conclude, therefore, that Sun on Westpoint is the chief expression of this event.

None of the other factors we normally examine has anything to say about this.

Checking lesser factors, we find the Arisolar has (surprise) transiting Sun on its Midheaven. Furthermore, Libsolar Ascendant is exactly squared by the same transiting Sun to the minute of arc at 8:00 PM, but we also have Uranus square Libsolar MC (1°11') and Mercury and Pluto conjunct it (< 2°).

That's five angular Suns, with almost no other angular planets at all (except for that set of Libsolar transits). Transiting Sun is utterly unaspected unless we count a counter-indicative semisquare with Venus.

Sun angular in mundane astrology most often focusses on the head of state or, more broadly, government or cultural leaders. I know nothing about this event to suggest that this is a relevant fact, or even that this is a terrorist attack upon the government in any but the most distant and obscure ways. We do often see angular Sun for attacks against a government, but then there is also indication of an attack.

The only thing unusual about this Sun, other than its ubiquity, is that it is in the Fall of Jupiter (15° Capricorn). I have sometimes seen this work as a profoundly un-Jupiter degree. Still, this is stretching things more than a little.

A mosque in Victoria, TX, which has been subject to numerous threats over the years, was burned Saturday morning (January 28), beginning at about 2:00 AM. The mosque was completely destroyed. (No injuries have been reported.)

In a related story, a mosque under construction in Austin was burned to the ground January 7.

There are two Victorias in Texas. I think this is the one in Victoria County, 28N48, 97W00, but I might be wrong.

The Victoria fire had the following:

The CAPSOLAR has Mercury half a degree from WP and Pluto 4° from Descendant.

The CAPLUNAR has Pluto square MC (partile), Mercury on WP (0°20'), Moon 20' from Descendant, and Jupiter-Uranus along the meridian.

So Far, these are consistent with shocking events and cultural differences, for example.

The CapQ rotated around to match the Caplunar angles, putting Sun on Descendant (compare Quebec) and some Mercury - not what we'd normally expect. Of great interest and just too far away (maybe the difference of across town or across county?), transiting Mars was 2°08' from the Capsolar MC as Mercury transited its Descendant.

These events that have a different feel than most fires are starting to feel strategic, calculated, part of something larger. That's what the charts seem to be saying.

I'll try to dig through that later... but, for example, in SMA (current edition), Chapter 15, page 237, I have the notorious 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, which is in the same vein. After a somewhat strange Capsolar, it has a Quarter chart with Neptune, Saturn, their aspect, and Moon-Pluto; a month with Saturn and Neptune plus aspects fuelling ideological passion plus grief and destruction; Uranus for the week; and, for the day, Uranus and Pluto transits plus Mars on a quotidian angle (and more than that on the CanQ).

It's so hard keeping up with this stuff. This, I guess, is a good example of the 0°01' mundane Moon-Uranus aspect in the Caplunar is like - the need for rapid adaptation because circumstances are changing too fast to even keep up. The news stories arise, change, evolve, move to something else faster than one can keep up with them. (This makes it easier for sleight of hand as well.)

Yesterday (February 1) inmates seized four corrections officers as hostages in a prison in Smyrna, Delaware shortly after 10:30 AM. The prison is in lockdown, it seems nobody has been badly hurt, and negotiations were still continuing this morning. (UPDATE: One guard died.)

We have times on some of the interim events. One officer was released about 2:30 PM, and another just before 8:00 PM. The main event, though, would be the start, at essentially 10:30 AM yesterday (with Mercury and Pluto on MC and Jupiter-Uranus just past the horizon).

The CAPSOLAR has Sun exactly square MC (0°17'), and the Jupiter-Uranus opposition foreground (Jupiter < 3°).; so the Sun-Jupiter square is a live factor.

The Caplunar is dormant. The LIBLUNAR has a Moon-Jupiter conjunction closely square Ascendant, and Sun and Pluto more widely straddling Ascendant. Normally we would read this as "the people" prevailing against perceived strong government forces (that, however, are weaker than "the people"). I'm not sure this applies to the inmates of the prison, but I mention the basic tone of the chart.

The solar trend continues in the CapQ, where transiting Sun exactly squares CapQ MC (because they've both been moving about the same speed since the Capsolar set up - so this is a weeks-long contact). The CanQ plays up the lunar side of the equation, since transiting Moon was crossing its angles in the hours immediately around the time the incident began, and transiting Venus exactly squares (11') CanQ Moon. (This is consistent with, say, nobody getting hurt thus far.)

But the real troubling trigger seems to be transiting Saturn 0°12' from Cansolar MC. All the signals in these charts look like pushback against authority, control, and hardship, and it would have to be something distinctive from the normal course of life in prison. We may find that there were oppressive conditions that reached some kind of physical or psychological threshold and pushed this event.

(UPDATE: The prisoners cited concerns about actions of the Trump Administration and that, consequently, conditions would deteriorate significantly at the prison.)

Breitbart news commentator and editor Milo Yiannopoulos accepted an invitation to speak at Berkeley and arrived yesterday to see 1,500 protestors, some of whom were wielding Molotov cocktails (which started fires). This erupted February 1. The speech was cancelled in the wake of violence that included property destruction. At least six people were injured.

The violence seems to have been due to an Oakland-area anarchist group called Black Bloc, but they were only perhaps 10% of the 1,500 protestors. The crowd at large was declaring, "This is war!" and that the campus was, "no safe space for racists."

As best I can tell, this was all happening about 6 PM.

Northern California already has a rough CAPSOLAR, with an afflicted Saturn closely setting, and Mercury and Neptune (square each other partile) in the foreground. This is quite consistent with property destruction, resistance, and mob reaction that agitates free speech issues, etc.

With a dormant Caplunar, Liblunar, and Canlunar, we fall back to the ARILUNAR, which has Neptune closely angular, with Mars and Venus nearby (Mars and Neptune widely conjunct).

CapQ MC exactly squared transiting Saturn, which had also just moved within 2° (ecliptic) of Capsolar Descendant. Transiting Pluto is only 20' from conjunct Cansolar Ascendant.
