Hurricane summaries for the 50 state project

Post by Jim Eshelman »

Here is a summary of the "50 state project" hurricanes except the 1938 New England hurricane which was the worst natural disaster for several states. (I'll tally it independently first.) Note that I'm treating Tropical Storm Camille for Virginia as a flood event, not a hurricane event.

SUMMARY
Year: Saturn Sun-Saturn Sun-Uranus
Month: Moon Mars Neptune Moon-Mars Moon-Jupiter Moon-Uranus Moon-Neptune Jupiter-Uranus Jupiter-Neptune Uranus-Neptune
Week: Pluto Moon-Mars Moon-Jupiter Moon-Uranus Moon-Neptune Venus-Pluto Mars-Jupiter Mars-Uranus Mars-Neptune Jupiter Uranus-Neptune
Day: Mercury Mars Mars Jupiter Jupiter Saturn Saturn Saturn Saturn Uranus Uranus Pluto Moon-Saturn Jupiter-Uranus

SUMMARY
Year: Moon-Mercury
Quarter: Saturn Moon-Pluto Mercury-Saturn
Month: Sun Mercury Sun-Mercury
Week: Moon
Day: Moon Mars Jupiter Neptune Pluto Moon-Jupiter

Here is a comparison of each state for each layer of the stack.

Year: All 4 had a reasonably good common showing:
Year: Venus Uranus Moon-Mercury Moon-Saturn
Two states added: Venus-Uranus
1 state added: Mercury-Saturn

Quarter: All 4 were dormant and had questionable aspects:
Moon-Venus Moon-Jupiter

Quarter (Arisolar, flow-through):
Every state had a very good basic showing:
Venus Uranus Moon-Sun Moon-Saturn Venus-Uranus
2 states added: Mercury
1 state added: Moon-Pluto

Month: Dormant in 2 states. 2 states had: Saturn.

Week: All states had a very good core showing:
Jupiter Moon-Venus Moon-Saturn Moon-Pluto Mars-Jupiter
2 states added: Neptune
1 state added: Mars Moon-Jupiter

Day (combining Cap & Can):
None of these were impressive. Every state had: Sun Venus Mars Moon-Mercury
2 states had 2 more Suns. 1 state had 1 more Sun.
2 states added Saturn.

SUMMARY: Overall, these were quite good. The individual Day showings weren't terribly impressive (but weren't horrible). The Dormant Cansolar left us with a pile of extra benefic Moon aspects that are out of the pattern of everything else. But, in general, the Year and (effective) Quarter charts had Venus-Uranus having electrical sensationalism (and, individually, reflecting precipitation and explosive destruction), the Month was dormant or had Saturn, and the Week was strikingly good (this is where we wanted and got the Jupiter BTW).

If we collate the 1938 New England Hurricane factors together, we get the following. I think the 4 Moon-Venus and 4 Moon-Jupiter aspects from the dormant Cansolar are distorting this - it's interesting to look at the numbers below with those extra 4 + 4 suppressed.

COMBINED
20 Venus
16 Saturn
10 Mercury
10 Sun
9 Jupiter
8 Uranus
6 Pluto
5 Mars
2 Neptune
0 Moon

ANGULAR
12 Venus
9 Sun
8 Uranus
5 Mars
4 Saturn
4 Jupiter
2 Neptune
2 Mercury

MOON ASPECTS
12 Moon-Saturn
8 Moon-Mercury
8 Moon-Venus
6 Moon-Pluto
5 Moon-Jupiter
1 Moon-Sun

OTHER ASPECTS
6 Venus-Uranus
4 Mars-Jupiter
1 Mercury-Saturn

Here's a comparison what we're used to seeing for major hurricanes.

Normally, the most common planets are Pluto, Saturn, Mars, and Neptune, with a bit of Sun. The most common Moon aspects are Moon-Saturn and Moon-Pluto. Rain planets (but mostly Jupiter) show in the lunar ingresses, but are otherwise rare. In fact, we have a marked shortage of Venus, both by angularity and Moon aspects.

The biggest divergence in this set is the marked presence of Venus. Partly this is the strong Venus-Uranus aspects in solar ingresses (an aspect that's descriptive via symbolism, but not historically common); partly those overflow Moon-Venus aspects in the dormant Cansolar; and partly the relatively useless daily timing factors. These all pile on the Venus.

That excluded, this New England hurricane matches the very strong historic Saturn presence - especially with Moon-Saturn aspects -- though not so much the Pluto (which isn't angular a single time, despite the extreme devastation). Mercury (wind?) plays a much stronger hand, especially by Moon aspects.

So we see some definite similarities and some definite dissimilarities.
