Mercury-Pluto and comedy

Post by Jim Eshelman »

Basic to the meaning of natal Mercury-Pluto aspects is a pattern of thinking (of generating thoughts) that is atypical, unbeholden to convention, outlier, and seems bizarre to others - leaping to concepts as if by no previously traced path.

This is the essence of stunning comedy!

Mercury-Pluto is also known for creating raw genius. Not everyone with a close Mercury-Pluto aspect exhibits genius, but the roots are there and - in a wide range of fields from science to mathematics to music to chess - genius appears. I think this is all the same "outlier" mental pattern.

This comes to mind today because I just noticed that, yes, Mercury-Pluto does seem to be a characteristic aspect for (a certain category of) brilliant comedy. Its reflexively unconventional thinking gives an instinct for comedy. Comedic geniuses with close, major Mercury-Pluto aspects include Robin Williams, Andy Kaufman, Dudley Moore, Jerry Lewis, and Lenny Bruce.

I'm surprised George Carlin isn't on the list, but he isn't. Do we allow his Mercury in Aries to count?

Other significant comedic talents include Cheech Marin, Chelsea Handler, Mary Tyler Moore, Steve Carrell, and more ordinary (but talented!) comics like Matt Le Blanc, Steve Allen, and Rosie O'Donnell.
