Post by Jim Eshelman »

Maryland's deadliest disaster was the crash of Pan American Flight 214 (aka the Clipper Tradewind).

December 8, 1963, 39N36'26", 75W47'20" near Elkton, MD. The Clipper Tradewind, the first jet ever delivered by a manufacturer to a U.S. airline, was struck by lightning (which ignited a fuel tank, causing an explosion that demolished the left wing). Explosion at 8:58 PM while in a holding pattern, and it soon crashed. 81 people (everyone on board) died. "Worst Lightning Strike Death Toll" of history.
