Jan 25-30, 2009. Lexington is the capital, and appears also to have been hit hard, so I'll use it for location. I can't narrow the time of impact on Kentucky from research, so I'll use -- 0:00 January 26 as a reasonable time when impact was strong.
65 died overall (35 in Kentucky), mostly from carbon monoxide poisoning from gas generators. Temperatures as low as -35° F. (in Michigan), $125M damage, 1.3M without power (500,000 in KY), across seven states (OK, AR, MO, IL, MI, KY). Western Kentucky was hardest hit in the nation. Kentucky had the largest National Guard call-up in its history, with every one of the 4,600 guards going door to door to check on residents.
The charts are quite extraordinary!
