Blizzard of 1949 [Storm]

Post by Jim Eshelman »

Nebraska's deadliest natural disaster was the Blizzard of 1949.

76 people died (and more than 158,000 cows and sheep) in the January, 1949 storm.

A ferocious blizzard began November 18, 1948, "with heavy snow, sleet, and winds of 50-70 miles per hour." This lasted two days. Roadways were shutdown, phone lines were frozen and broken, most things came to a halt. Hartington and Bloomfield (in NE Nebraska) were hit hardest, getting 24" of snow. Omaha and Lincoln experienced "heavy rain and some snow, but missed the worst of the storm."

The next storm began January 2 and lasted 3 days. Temperature had warmed, so rain fell first, then things got worse. 50-60 mph winds with ferocious snow fall.

The last half of January then brought sub-zero temperatures, freezing rain, and more snow. A further storm hit the last week of March, delivering 20" of snow around North Platte. A final fierce storm hit April 14, bringing 12" of snow.

Despite the name, the November 18, 1948 inauguration is best timed and seems to kick things off. It also gives us Hartington (42N37, 97W16) and Bloomfield (42N36, 9739) as locations. At another time, I should study the series of storms over the entire winter. Use noon on the 18th, for Hartington.
