Iowa's deadliest natural disaster is the Armistice Day Blizzard from 1940.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1940_Armi ... y_Blizzard
The blizzard formed November 11, 1940. The day began with unseasonably warm temperatures which climbed into the mid-60s by early afternoon, them rapidly plummeted. Winds arose, sleet and snow fell. A "raging blizzard" began that lasted into the 12th, dropping 27" of snow and 50-80 mph winds driving 20' drifts. I'm not sure where it was worst in Iowa (which doesn't seem to have been the worst state hit; one picture portrays Davenport, but I think the whole state was buried).
The storm covered a 1,000-mile-wide swath, reaching from Kansas to Michigan. 145 people (and thousands of cattle) died across the larger region.
I have low expectations for this event, because it doesn't seem really localized in Iowa, though it does represent a couple of days that were Iowa's worst in some respects, and the state is near the center of the area impacted. Let's try November 12, 1940, 0:00, Des Moines, IA (capital and approximate center).
