Market Drop
Posted Mon Jan 04, 2016 10:40 am by Jim Eshelman
First day of trading for the year, the DJIA dropped about 400 points. Rumor (meaning, I haven't been able to go confirm this on my own) is that China's market tanked overnight to the point where they shut it down.
For Washington, the new Libsolar is even and weird, but not market-destructive. There's some unsteadiness for the month with Saturn-Neptune on the Dec 13 Caplunar, though, and we saw that through late December and again now. I don't know if anyone got around to saying that the four weeks beginning December 13 would be bad for the market, but it was there, in a form we're used to seeing and talking about routinely. Washington CanQ has Neptune at MC today, but squared by Venus, so I suspect this is a bump before an adjustment. (Buy today.)
For Beijing, the new Liblunar has Pluto setting - a shock or blow, with the government having to hustle to deal with a crisis. There is also a (less angular) foreground Sun-Jupiter square (mundane), so there is a lot of money-management shuffle ("people with power & money moving to make sure they get to keep it and increase it," as I usually say with this). Usual market maintenance manipulation.

Obama executive action - gun control
Posted Tue Jan 05, 2016 12:47 pm by Jim Eshelman
This morning, President Obama bypassed congress on the issue of gun control with executive orders affecting ease of acquisition of firearms. The most publicized feature requires that two groups of people involved in high volume sales (previously considered exempt from background checks) will need formal licensing and will be required to keep formal sales records. (There are many other provisions, including many I probably know nothing about since I haven't read an exhaustive summary.)
With the amount of publicity around this, one would think it would be a "significant event" astrologically - I suppose we will see, over the next couple of days, whether it grabs popular attention. (It will, of course, stir opponent reaction and supporter reaction enough to give the news media plenty to write about for at least a couple of days.)
But... does it show astrologically and, if so, then how?
I don't see it clearly in the lunar ingresses - either the current Caplunar month chart of the Liblunar week chart. The Liblunar has Venus closely rising, and some will consider that this is the tone of the step he has taken. I see it more clearly, though, in the partile Jupiter-Saturn mundane square - political back-and-forth, tension from oppositional views, lack of clear demarcation between issues on one side and on the other - plus a widely foreground Neptune connected to them.
What I don't see is a pronounced Sun. Before it is anything else, this event is an unusually strong executive action, and we should be seeing signs of executive action per se. In that sense, the Jupiter-Saturn is not a good fit, because this isn't a "horse trading" moment - "What do I have to give up to win?"
The strongest daily indicator in Washington, DC is CanQ Midheaven exactly conjunct transiting Neptune, and moving through Cansolar Neptune over the next few days. This is certainly the aspect of the week (MC will leave a 2° orb of all of these Neptunes Saturday morning.) I expect more emotional than rational discourse from this (but, then, that's what the issue would likely stir anyway). Today, the Neptune is squared by Venus - most interesting since, first, it means today's emotional discourse is about peace and loved ones, but that will pass as Venus moves on to conjoin Saturn by the end of the week, and both of them square CanQ MC or cross WP (as soon as tomorrow).
Also, Venus-Neptune is a distinctive aspect for shooting massacres. This seems... homeopathic.

N Korea hydrogen bomb?
Posted Wed Jan 06, 2016 2:09 am by Jim Eshelman
At 7:06 PM PST, NY Times reported that authorities were investigating a tremor in North Korea that might suggest new nuclear testing. Within the hour, North Korea announced that it had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb.
The tremor was equal to a 5.1 magnitude quake about 10:00 AM local time. Around 9 PM PST, the U.N. Security Council announced they will hold an emergency meeting (at the request of U.S. and Japan) to investigate the claim.
I show a 5.1 earthquake at 41.305°N 129.039°E at 1:30:01 UT (January 6), 21 km ENE of Sungjibaegam, North Korea. Neptune is exactly rising for this event. This is 10:30 AM JST.
Capsolar: North Korea had a very success-oriented Capsolar this year, with Jupiter rising (squared by Moon). The Cansolar has Sun rising for pride.
Caplunar: The December 14 Caplunar for Pyongyang has Jupiter 1° below Dsc, partile square Sun - very much success and pride oriented. Uranus and Neptune (sounds nuclear to me, yeah?) are widely foreground. (The only other non-dormant lunar ingress since then is the Arilunar, with Sun angular and Jupiter widely foreground.)
CapQ: Complex, not simple, but (bottom line) positive-tending for today and emphasizing the military side of Mercury.
As far as the world in general is concerned, the 5.1 impact went off with Sun conjunct Pluto within 0°05', and a stationary Mercury square Mars within 0°20'. So yeah, I think North Korea did set off a nuclear device and is celebrating like crazy.
COMMENT: Does anyone really think that China, which mostly bankrolls North Korea and is their primary friend in the world, is going to let them have a hydrogen bomb? I could see them being used as out-sourcing for making something for China (but, then, China already has hydrogen bombs, so that's another matter); but I really can't believe China would let the Kim brat have one of those for himself.
I do think the success was great enough for a victory celebration and enhanced pride in North Korea yesterday.

The White House just came out and announced it wasn't a hydrogen bomb, but a just your basic atomic bomb with tridium added to satisfy the Leader's desire for a hydrogen bomb.
I don't know... that felt like poking the bear.

Re: Market Drop
Posted Wed Jan 06, 2016 10:04 pm by Jim Eshelman
China's market was just halted again. Our own market dropped over 250 points today, and you can expect it will start tomorrow 200-300 down because of the Chinese market being halted for the second time this week.
This Saturn-Neptune Caplunar is kicking our market in the butt. (It's just what we'd expect from Saturn-Neptune on economics, of course. I don't think this is the Big One - not until after mid-year - but it is certainly showing the fragility of the international markets.)

Not bad. It dropped 296 in the first few minutes. There's a pattern to these things

Istanbul explosion
Posted Tue Jan 12, 2016 10:09 am by Jim Eshelman
This morning at 10:15 to 10:20 AM in a central square in Istanbul, Turkey, an explosion killed at least 10 people and wounded 15 others.
Reports are now coming in that this was likely a suicide bomb, and likely Syrian in origin. The chart for the time of the explosion has only Jupiter angular, so I easily believe it was a religion-triggered event.
The new Caplunar is dormant in Istanbul. The persisting Canlunar has only Venus angular, though with a very tight Moon-Mercury-Mars T-square. (Moon-Mars is 0°50'.) This is distinctive to Istanbul only in that most parts of the world have moved on to other lunar ingresses and are no longer holding onto this Canlunar.
Transiting Mars squares Istanbul's Capsolar MC (barely still within 2°, but good enough). It is also a mere 0°13' from CapQ WP. Another Jupiter appears, though - same theme as above - with CapQ Asc square s. Jupiter 1°+.
Furthermore, the CapQ is interesting because we are in the few days (before the upcoming new Capsolar) that CapQ Moon aspects the lethal Mars-Saturn square in the 2015 Capsolar:
p. Moon 6°27' Scorpio
s. Saturn 7°17' Scorpio
s. Mars 7°25' Aquarius

Oil drops below $30
Posted Tue Jan 12, 2016 3:02 pm by Jim Eshelman
Today, crude oil prices fell below $30/barrel - first time since 2003. CNN reports that this is 19% this year (2016!) alone, and 72% down from June 2014.
This isn't a U.S. or local issue, so I don't think it applies to any of the systems we're watching. I don't see any partile aspects or sign placement shifts that speak to this, unless - just maybe - Saturn in Scorpio is affecting it. If Scorpio here means "power," then we would expect oil to be spiking.
Just mentioning it...

Hurricane Alex
Posted Thu Jan 14, 2016 10:24 am by Jim Eshelman
Alex is upgraded to a hurricane - the first January-forming hurricane since 1938! It is due to hit the Azores perhaps as early as today.
For Ponta Delgada, the nearly-expired Capsolar has Mars < 3° below Ascendant (and, for the rain, Jupiter just beyond the 3° mark). And, remember, we are now in a few days when CapQ Moon is aspecting the Capsolar Mars-Saturn. They may be in for a hard hit!
The January 10 Caplunar has perfectly typical hurricane markers:
Neptune on Asc (0°25')
Saturn sq. Asc (2°08')
Venus-Saturn conj. (1°28')
-- Venus & Jupiter distantly foreground
Here's the rough current timing, though: Right this minute, transiting Saturn is 0°33' from Capsolar Midheaven. This could be very severe for them. Simultaneously, transiting Neptune is conjunct Capsolar Neptune. Read the Hurricanes chapter of SMA and see just how often Saturn + Neptune has marked major hurricanes.
Oh, and if that's not enough... CapQ MC is also 17° Scorpio, and getting closer to Saturn over the next 24 hours. Saturn transiting Capsolar MC AND on CapQ MC is about as clear as it gets. (And, of course, Neptune is on both EPs.)
All of these factors - every one of them except the Caplunar - completely disappears tomorrow at 3:45 PM WAT when the Capsolar itself disappears. Any effect will be before then. However, the aftereffects are shown in the new Capsolar, which is quite simple: Neptune 0°13' from MC. I think this is the, "OMG what a mess!" placement... without the benefit of having thrown a party the night before.

Jakarta attacks
Posted Thu Jan 14, 2016 10:40 am by Jim Eshelman
Downtown Jakarta was the center of deadly gun and bomb attacks by ISIL affiliates a few hours ago. They began with a single suicide bomber at 10:00 AM. Overall, 5 explosions were set off.
Death toll has been minimal so far (variously reported as 2 to 4 people).
None of the solar ingresses are operative until the current quarter, with the Libsolar having Uranus 1°40' before MC and Pluto 1°00' before Descendant - their square being 0°40'' in mundo.
The Caplunar is deadly and explosive: Mars (the most common planet by far for bombs) is 1°59' from IC. Moon and Mercury are closely angular, and Mercury (2°20' above Dsc) is 0°21' from mundane square to Mars, the kind of aspect showing military precision in planning and execution. Sun is widely foreground.
The main short-term timer is in the CapQ aspects: CapQ Moon at 6°31' Scorpio is 0°46' from conjunct Capsolar Moon, 0°54' from square Capsolar Mars. Sun is the only planet grabbing a CapQ angle.

Market drops 350 on opening
Posted Fri Jan 15, 2016 10:10 am by Jim Eshelman
We had a horrible market month under the prior Caplunar, as predictable from its Saturn-Neptune dominance. Then the new Caplunar came in and I almost predicted things would level out but, dang, the chart is still nasty and unhappy, even if not in the same way. So I wasn't at all sure it would soften.
Things levelled off for a few days - then, yesterday, started down and, today, fell off a small cliff at the opening.
I had joked aloud that the market was boring for a few days because investors were buying PowerBall tickets instead; then, after Wednesday night's drawing, they went back to work. That doesn't seem to be the case.
Is this a last hurrah of the old Capsolar... or the setup for the first Capsolar in four years that doesn't have a Moon-Jupiter aspect?

I think the collapsing price of oil is the main reason bugging Wall Street.
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon kicked off bank earnings season Thursday by warning of "stress" in energy loans amid falling oil prices. The superstar CEO walked away from the bearish comment largely unscathed — for now — as shares rose nearly 2% Thursday to $58.46 each. But Dimon's remark has Wall Street analysts more attuned than ever to how this could impact earnings elsewhere — and at JPMorgan (JPM), if things worsen.

I agree with Steve, and if it continues, this is about oil prices. The Saudis are trying to hurt the Iranians through keeping oil prices at rock bottom, but I think it's more than that. If it continues, this could be on a par with the bursting of the housing bubble in it's effects on the markets.
China's markets falling through the floor hasn't helped either.
Where is Saturn again? 17° Scorpio?

Taiwan elections
Posted Sat Jan 16, 2016 12:01 pm by Jim Eshelman
Taiwan just elected its first female president. The concession was reported by CNN at about 4:30 AM PST, which was 8:30 PM (Jan 16) in Tapei.
The new Capsolar has Mars square MC < 2°, and a little Sun.
The Caplunar is dormant. The effective Week chart is the January 3 Liblunar, with:
Pluto on Dsc (0°42')
Uranus sq. Asc (1°32')
Sun on Dsc (2°42')
-- Uranus-Pluto sq. (1°27')
-- Sun-Pluto conj. (2°43')
Moon-Mercury sq. (2°53' in mundo)
This is most suitably descriptive of a dramatic, unprecedented, ground-shifting event involving the president.
Similarly, Cansolar MC is 22°39' Gemini, so it is receiving a transit from Uranus for the period.

Burkina Faso attack
Posted Sat Jan 16, 2016 12:14 pm by Jim Eshelman
Today's slaughter is an attack on the luxury Splendid Hotel in Burkina Faso. The hotel is in the country's capital, Ouagadougou (12N22, 1W31). The attack began around 8:00 PM Friday night with the explosion of cars out front, and "dragged on under the cover of darkness."
At least 23 people are dead. Extreme fear is the most described tone. Blood was "everywhere." Al-Qaeda claimed credit. It does seem to me that they are busy competing with ISIL for headlines
The new Capsolar wasted no time marking its turf, though rather neutrally. Moon is 0°35' from Zenith. Pluto is more widely foreground (if we allow a slightly larger orb, there is a 3°37' Moon-Pluto mundane square.)
The Caplunar already had the characteristics of the time marked: Uranus rises (< 3° below Ascendant) square a foreground Pluto (1°17').
The panic is well shown by the CanQ, with Neptune < 1° from square MC (and getting closer throughout the night). It also squares Cansolar MC < 2°.
Since people usually ask ... where is the Mars? There isn't any in the main charts unless we count that the key angular Neptune is trined by Mars. This is quite a stretch of the way things usually work, though. For these terrorist attacks, the main indications are the outer three planets - Uranus and Pluto (usually together) for the radical assault itself, Neptune when there is extreme terror.
I would have expected Mars for the explosions, though - it's the most active planet for bombs - but Uranus is the other planet that is almost universally present for explosions. With all the fine detail, though... yeah, I'd have liked to see some pronounced Mars on this one.

Iran sanctions lifted
Posted Sun Jan 17, 2016 6:29 pm by Jim Eshelman
Yesterday, the U.S. and its allies agreed that Iran had complied with its agreements on nuclear armaments, and lifted sanctions on Iran, releasing about $100 billion Iranian in assets that had been locked down. This should be a good day in Tehran, yes?
This show the working through of the current (January 10) Caplunar, which has Jupiter 0°05' from square Ascendant for Tehran! Besides the windfall of financial advantage, Jupiter is also the planet of diplomacy, and describes much that has happened this week.
(There is also Venus-Saturn plus Neptune more widely foreground. Considering that the Libsolar has a Venus-Neptune opposition square Ascendant, I'm not ruling out betrayal and deception either by or to Iran in the scope of all of this.)
It also occurred the day transiting Sun conjoined Tehran's Cansolar MC and CanQ IC.

Flint, MI water issues
Posted Wed Jan 20, 2016 11:36 am by Jim Eshelman
Flint has been in the news for weeks. The new Capsolar has Sun on EP there, so we would expect (and are seeing) increased government attention and involvement.
The current Caplunar also is drawing attention there - revelations and brutal problems. Uranus is closely rising. A Mars-Pluto mundane square is foreground.

Market plunge
Posted Wed Jan 20, 2016 5:48 pm by Jim Eshelman
U.S. stock markets all fell more than 3% today (the Dow 560 points) before recovering somewhat (eventual -260 at close. This makes the Dow 11% below its December 29 recent high (which wasn't event the full top).
It would have been 13% below if it had stopped at the bottom mid-day. I'm sure it was a good day to buy IBM over lunch.

If a bear market is in place--then a couple of months after the 2016 Cansolar we may see panic type conditions. If so, this will become a field day for the two candidates running for Prez. 2016 is shaping-up to be one crazy year.

Technically (formal definition) it IS a bear market - running more than 12% below the S&P top last May (I think that's the threshold. Some want to see a 20% drop, though.) It's 9% down just since the first if the year.
This is the first time in, what 5 years the Capsolar hasn't had a close Moon-Jupiter aspect.

Yes, and the markets definitely have a totally different feel than the optimism aspect of Moon-Jupiter for the past 5 years.

East/South winter storms
Posted Thu Jan 21, 2016 10:57 am by Jim Eshelman
Freezing storms, and a prediction of up to 30" of snow in DC by the end of the week, are hitting the southeast in particular. (Steve, are you guys battened down?)
The current Arilunar is Uranus-Pluto heavy for Washington, which is extreme impact, but isn't otherwise what we'd normally expect from a severe bad weather chart. What I think is more relevant, is that Jupiter is 4° off the IC. That's enough to account for unseasonal high precipitation, and the Jupiter-Pluto combination is typical of outlier weather events.
The Jupiter-Pluto intersection is in Ontario, but the Jupiter IC line cuts up through the Carolinas, Virginia, etc., and spills over several hundred miles either side.
Speaking of outlier climate events, yesterday the news broke that NOAA has compiled its 2015 world temperature report. Since they began tracking such things in 1880, 2014 was the hottest year ever... until 2015 broke its record. And, within 2015, December was the hottest month ever recorded on the planet (since 1880). ... I think I see a pattern here.
It used to be a joke that Iceland is green, while Greenland is ice; but Greenland is getting greener every year.

The storm is now expected to his DC tomorrow afternoon, so it will definitely be hitting under the new Canlunar, not the current Arilunar. Notice the Venus rising line slicing up the East Coast - that's the mega-precipitation indicator.
But also: Expect a consequent baby boom in late October

NYC transit shut down for storm
Posted Sat Jan 23, 2016 3:37 pm by Jim Eshelman
Hurricane Sandy's best astrological timing was for the high regional-impact event of NYC halting it's subways and other public transit at a prescheduled time. Something similar but smaller is happening in the next hour.
New York City (expecting 30" of snow in the hours ahead) is halting inbound and outbound public transit - the Metro-North and Long Island rail routes. These will stop at 4:00 PM EST today.
So far, eight people have died from the storm, mostly in North Carolina. Eleven states and the District of Columbia have declared states of emergency. Over 8,600 flights were cancelled (mostly days ago) stranding huge numbers of people. Over 200,000 people are without power across 13 states.
Here is NY for 4:00 PM today:
CAPSOLAR: Mars 1°41' from Dsc. Mercury 3°30' from MC. (They are in 1°49' mundane square.) Meaning: Destruction related to wind. (Add a close foreground Uranus-Pluto square, indicating high-impact + buildings will fall.)
CAPLUNAR: Much the same: Mercury 1°05' from EP. Mars 4°22' from Mv in 0°27' mundane square to Pluto 4°49' below Asc. Add a partile mundane Moon-Sun conjunction. Explosive power adds to the overall matter, and the focus is especially on Mercury - not just wind, but the transportation issues.
CANLUNAR: Venus 0°12' from Asc, Uranus widely in the lower foreground. This is the chart that shows the major transportation (and, I again suggest, sufficient opportunistic sex to have a baby boom in October). Partile Mercury-Pluto conjunction (0°28') foreground.
DAILY INDICATORS (Capsolar): (None.)
DAILY INDICATORS (Cansolar): Transiting Venus squares CanQ MC (0°20') at 4:00 PM, which is a little strange but at least goes along with the Canlunar. Also, the "big storm" theme continues with transiting Jupiter still sitting within 1° of Cansolar MC. These are not, however, strong indicators on the major daily charts, at least as things look at the moment.

Alaska earthquake
Posted Sun Jan 24, 2016 1:03 pm by Jim Eshelman
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Alaska near Cook Inlet just before I went to bed last night. It occurred January 24, 2016, 10:30:30 UT, 59N39'29", 153W27'07".
I suppose this was gravitational triggered - adding an astrophysical element. There was a Full Moon last night, and the quake occurred a few minutes after midnight with the luminaries being pretty equally distributed with respect to the meridian, Sun being 1°28' past IC and Moon 3°09' before MC. From an astrological perspective, though, that Moon squares Mars on EP for a shot of adrenaline, and Uranus is also foreground.
It's a pretty benign event that doesn't show very dramatically except for the lunar ingress of the week and a single but appropriate quotidian trigger. This is consistent with no deaths, no injuries, and no significant damage. There is a fair bit of Venus in these charts, and the witness reports quoted by CNN described the earthquake as "starting softly" and then gradually increasing slowly - the main cause of anxiety was that nobody knew how big it would get before it stopped.

Market leap!
Posted Fri Jan 29, 2016 4:36 pm by Jim Eshelman
The market is closing today almost 400 points up! This is a huge splurge. Oil is certainly lubricating the way.
That flips the bars... the week will solidly end UP. This brings it back to about the January 14 level.

We could see the market play zippity- doo-dah racing up and down till shortly after 2016 Cansolar, or maybe after the election. If the nasty 2016 solar ingresses timed with the Dec 31 2016 nasty Caplunar produce malefic event-- may see market hit panic mold.
