Great Fire of 1910 [Wildfire]

Post by Jim Eshelman »

Montana's and Idaho's deadliest natural disaster ever aka the Big Blowup, Big Burn, or Devil's Broom Fire.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Fire_of_1910

Wildfire August 20-21, 1910. It started August 20 (time unknown to me) when "hurricane force winds" whipped "hundreds of small fires" into one huge fire. I'll use noon August 20. In Montana, it seems to center around the cluster of towns De Borgia, Haugan, and Henderson (among others) which were completely destroyed - Haugan is in the middle of the other two and probably makes the best spot. (These are near the western border near Idaho.) [Before publishing, I should try to read contemporary newspaper accounts to get a local feel of this.]

Falcon, ID was "completely destroyed," and isn't too far from the Montana locations named. Another spot of interest, worth comparing for greater distance, is Wallace, ID, where one-third of the town was burned, causing about $1M in damage. Thousands were evacuated by rail to as far as Spokane. Still, Wallace is so close to the location used above, that there is no practical difference. No need to examine it again.

87 people died when three million acres of Washington, Idaho, and western Montana burned in the largest forest fire in U.S. history.

The charts (given here for Montana) are not particularly good until we get down near the end. (The earlier ones aren't bad, they're just nondescript.) This may partly be a result of the event being spread over so large an area. But Mars transiting both the Capsolar and Cansolar angles for the event, plus square the Week chart horizon, is all we need.
