Thumb Fire [Wildfire]

Post by Jim Eshelman »

Michigan's deadliest natural disaster.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thumb_fire

September 5, 1881, in Michigan's "thumb" region (as if the state were shaped like a mitten). Several consequences of the fire (listed in the article above). From a fire that had been burning since mid-August, Bad Axe, MI burst into flames and winds spread the fire to nearby towns. (The town of Bad Axe matches the usually given center of the fire as 43.8N, 83.0W, almost to the minute.)

Over a million acres burned in a single day. 282 people died. Damages estimated at more than $2.3 million. Absent a time, I'm using noon.
