Battle of Thermopylae

Post by Jim Eshelman »

In 480 BC, either on August 20 or on September 8-10, a critical battle occurred at Thermopylae, Greece (38N48 22E32) in which a Sparta-centered alliance fell to the Persian Empire of Xerxes I. Concurrently, a major naval battle was waged (to a stalemate), the Battle of Artemisium (dated as August 7 or September 8-10, Artemisium, Euboea).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae

Year: Capsolar
Moon on MC (0°13')
Neptune on Dsc (3°36')
Mercury on Dsc (4°23')
-- Mercury-Neptune conj. (0°47' in mundo)
Sun on Dsc (9°01')

Quarter: Cansolar
Moon rises (0°28') [What's this lunar theme in the event?]
Saturn on IC (5°03')

Month: Caplunar
The Caplunar is dormant. (Note, though, that its strongest planets are Neptune and - again! - Moon.)

Week: Liblunar (flow-through)
If the August 20 date is correct, then the effective Chart of the Week is the August 7 Liblunar. It is definitely a "defeat" chart.
Neptune on MC (0°36')
Saturn on Asc (1°34')
-- Saturn-Neptune sq. (0°58' in mundo)
Mercury on Dsc (4°33')
-- Mercury-Saturn op. (2°59')
Venus on Dsc (9°33')
Moon on Dsc (9°39')
-- Mo/Ve on Dsc (0°03')

Fortnight (possible): Canlunar
If the September date is correct, we continue the lunar theme:
Moon-Mercury sq. (0°09')
Mercury on Asc (0°42')
Moon on MC (2°36')
Neptune on IC (6°39')

Week (possible): Liblunar
If the September date is correct, we get a mixed message Liblunar. (I find this date, like this chart, to be dubious.)
Jupiter on MC (0°18'), stationery
Saturn on Dsc (0°24')
-- Jupiter-Saturn sq. (0°42' in mundo)
Venus sq. MC (0°16')
-- Venus-Jupiter sq. (0°24')

Day (1st date): Capsolar Quotidian & Transits
If the August date is correct, here is the CapQ:
CapQ MC conj. t. Pluto (0°47')
CapQ MC sq. p. Mars (0°15'), s. Mars (0°15')
-- t. Pluto sq. p. Mars (0°32'), s. Mars
CapQ Asc conj s. Venus (0°42')
------------------------------------------
t. Venus op. s. MC (1°14'), op. s. Moon (0°15')
t. Mercury sq. s. Asc (0°03')

The peaceful Venus transit yields to the CapQ angularities of Mars-Pluto for one of history's great battles.

Day (1st date): Cansolar Transits
If the August date is correct, the CanQ has nothing quite in orb. However, there are transits to the Cansolar:
t. Sun conj. s. MC (0°40')
t. Saturn op. s. MC (0°51')
-- Sun-Saturn op. (0°11')
In contrast, transiting Venus and Jupiter are just a little outside the allowed orb and give no assisdtance.

Day (2nd date): Capsolar Transits
If the September date is correct, the only transit to the Capsolar is t. Sun sq. Capsolar Asc < 1°.

Day (2nd date): Cansolar Quotidian & Transits
If the September date is correct, here is the CanQ:
CanQ Asc sq. s. Pluto, t. Pluto < 2°

Also, there is one rather decisive transit:
t. Saturn op. s. MC (0°36')

SUMMARY
Year: Moon (Sun, Mercury, Neptune). Mercury-Neptune.
Quarter: Moon (Saturn).
Month: (Dormant.)
Week (by flow-through): Saturn, Neptune (Moon, Mercury, Venus). Mo/Ve, Mercury-Saturn, Saturn-Neptune.
Day (Capsolar): Venus, Mars, Pluto (CapQ). Mercury, Venus Moon-Venus (transits to Capsolar).

By astrological indications, August 20 is clearly the date, not the September dates.

I think the strong lunar theme might be expressive of this battle being an outstanding example of passionate patriots defending their native soil.
