Mideast 1979

Post by Jim Eshelman »

In an insightful commentary on recent decades of Mideast geopolitical shifts, NY Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman, who was on the ground in Beirut in 1979, recently wrote a summary of events and their cultural and geopolitical import.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/29/opini ... -1979.html

I plan to extract some events from this, do a little research, and see what the whole thing looked like astrologically.

EVENTS

1. In 1979, Islamist extremists took overt the Grand Mosque in Mecca and challenged the religious credentials of the Saudi ruling family. A deal was cut.

2. In 1979, Iran's Islamic Revolution propelling Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to power.

3. In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.

4. [Three Mile Island: I've already written this up at length.]

November 20 to December 4, 1979, Mecca. (The start date was the first day of Muslim year 1400.) The seizure began at about 5:00 AM on November 20 by approximately 500 insurgents. In the two weeks of the seizure, 382 died and 1,011 more were injured. (The numbers could have been higher.)

(Wikipedia:) "...extremist insurgents calling for the overthrow of the House of Saud took over Al-Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The insurgents declared that the Mahdi (the "redeemer of Islam") had arrived in the form of one of their leaders – Mohammed Abdullah al-Qahtani – and called on Muslims to obey him.

"The seizure of Islam's holiest site, the taking of hostages from among the worshipers, and the deaths of hundreds of militants, security forces and hostages caught in crossfire in the ensuing battles for control of the site, all shocked the Islamic world. The siege ended two weeks after the takeover began and the mosque was cleared. Following the attack, the Saudi state implemented a stricter enforcement of Islamic code."

The Iranian Revolution, overthrowing the Pahlavi dynasty, lasted from January 1978 to February 1979, so we would expect it to be reflected especially in the 1978 Capsolar. It climaxed with the Shaw's departure for Iran on January 16, 1979 - immediately after the onset of a new Capsolar. The rule of Persian royalty ultimately collapsed February 11, 1979, securing Ayatolla Khomeini's rule.
