Port Arthur Massacre

April 28, 1996, beginning 11:45 AM, in Port Arthur, Tasmania (43S08'12", 147E51'10"), lasted until about 8:00 AM the next morning stretched across numerous individual sites. 35 died, 24 injured (including the shooter).

"...on of the deadliest shootings worldwide committed by a single person" (Wikipedia). This event led to Australia's introduction of strict gun control laws. The shooter's motivation for the shootings is reportedly known to his lawyer but kept an extremely guarded secret, though it appears to be tied to a wish to be known through subsequent publicity.
