Land Rush of 1889

Post by Jim Eshelman »

April 22, 1889, beginning at noon. 50,000 people lined up for a rush on two million acres of land in the Oklahoma Territory. Settlers could claim up to 160 acres if they lived on the land and improved it. "The Unassigned Lands were considered some of the best unoccupied public lands in the United States."

In one-half day, Oklahoma City and Guthrie were established, with populations of 10,000 each. According to Harper's Weekly, between noon and sunset, in Guthrie, "streets had been laid out, town lots staked off, and steps taken toward the formation of a municipal government."

By every expectation, this should be a Jupiter event. Satisfyingly, it is.
