In Jamestown, Virginia on March 22, 1622, Powhatan Indians invaded colonist settlements and killed everyone they found - "men, women, and children of all ages," 347 people in all, which was one-fourth of the community's population. (More would have been killed had it not been for a tip-off that the attackers were coming.) They also attacked many smaller communities nearby, with similar violence.
The Powhatan correctly perceived that that British had come to colonize and own their land, and saw themselves as defending their homes by killing invaders.
I will use March 22, 1622, noon, Jamestown, VA as working data.
