Tompkins Square Park riot

August 7, 1988, 11:30 PM, New York, NY. In Thompkins Square Park on Manhattan's East Village, many groups of people - including the homeless, drug pushers, and skinhead groups - revolted against a newly imposed 1 AM curfew (in a park that had historically been open 24 hours a day).

Protests were held July 31 and August 6. On the latter occasion, police charged the protestors. This August 64 date is the event normally known as the Tompkins Square Park riot.

I find that it lasted until 6 AM the next morning (August 7). It was about 11:30 PM (as Moon opposed Saturn) that up to 200 protestors entered the park, and the police soon engaged them. Even former neighborhood groups supporting the curfew turned against it and against the police for their actions.

Overall, it is a typical stack for populist uprising in the face of perceived excessive authority.
