HOW TO - Untimed Charts

Post by Jim Eshelman »

I created a Chart Options set called Untimed. You might want to consider it for untimed charts.

Untimed charts are customarily calculated for 12:00 PM (or, rather, the center of the possible birth range which - when you know the birth data only for the day - means noon). While we don't really need a chart wheel for an untimed chart, it doesn't hurt anything. The real consideration, since TMSA makes it so easy to rely on the interpretation details, is that we don't want anything to show that is dependent on time of birth.

These things are easy to remove, though.

To create a new Chart Options set, click Chart Options. In the blank at the top (that initially says "Default Natal"), type the name of the options set (I suggest using "Untimed"). - We then make the customizations we want and click Save. It will save your settings to the Options name in the top field (e.g., "Untimed").

Your Default Natal options load automatically. After typing the new name at the top, we need to make just a few changes to the options in order to remove information that depends on a birth time.
  • On Background settings, check Don't Mark. (We don't want either foreground or background marked.)
  • In the Foreground row, remove all entries. This means that nothing will be labelled as angular.
  • In the aspects section, remove all entries under Mundane Aspects. (We don't know mundane aspects without a birth time. While you could just ignore them, it's better to remove them: This allows ecliptical aspects between the same planets to show instead.)
  • If you don't normally have Class 3 ecliptical aspects, I suggest you add them. If nothing else, it allows you to see all possible Moon aspects throughout the day.
  • Under Show Aspects, make sure All is selected. (It probably is, though you might have changed it. If you choose either of the other options, "1+ FG" or "2 FG," you will get no aspects.)
Click Save. Now, when you calculated an untimed birth chart, set the time to noon and, under Options, select Untimed. You'll probably only look at the sign placements and aspects (and how these sort out in the Cosmic State report. You can't be sure all the Moon aspects are right, but you can see a wide range of aspects Moon could have on the day. One useful thing: Moon's speed shows you the most that Moon moves in a day, so you know the farthest Moon could wander (for a noon chart) is half this amount.

Here's my chart - my 4:13 AM birth time shifted to noon just as an example of the output. There is still a LOT of information here!
