Stellia

Post by Jim Eshelman »

A stellium (pl. stellia) is a cluster of planets. In the present context, it means many planets in one sign, placing unusual emphasis on that sign. There is no hard rule about how many planets constitute a stellium, but, since three planets in a sign is common, I suggest de-fining a stellium as four or more planets in one constellation.

Stellia are somewhat rare. Finding one that does not include Sun is even rarer. Interpret a stellium’s sign as having a strong emphasis on the character and, especially, on how the life will unfold in the world. A stellium is not as strong as a Sun or Moon sign, but probably about as important as Mars’ sign.

One branch of my family has a strong hereditary predisposition to stellia running through the women for several generations: a woman with a Sagittarius stellium; her two daughters with Scorpio and Virgo stellia; each of those daughters had a daughter with a Libra stellium (and one other with a Virgo stellium), one of whom had a daughter with an Aquarius stellium. Notice that the signs were not the inherited characteristic: It is the fact of having a stellium at all.

In a recent post, I documented that my collection of timed birth charts for murderers has an unusual frequency of stellia, especially in those signs in which Venus is in detriment. I've just completed identifying the stellia in my large sample Example Chart Catalogue. Of 924 current example public figures, 174 stellia exist. This sets an expectation of about 19% - almost one chart in five - which is higher than I expected to see in general population. It may be that the existence of a stellium is such a high concentration of energy that it much one more toward notoriety or fame - but that's a preliminary thought only, barely more than an idle thought.

Thanks for reminding me this was here - I wanted to finish sorting these. In appreciation for the reminder, I took the list at least to the Sagittarius stellia :) then decided to finish it.

My mother had a 5 planet stellium in Pisces. Other than myself, with 4 planets in Cancer, she was the only member of my family to have a stellia.

When I looked at the synastry, apart from a partile Saturn-Saturn and her Saturn square my ASC at 2°37’, there aren’t many dynamic aspects. We were close so I had expected stronger aspects than trines but it becomes clearer when comparing my Novien to her natal. Unfortunately, I don’t have her birth time just an approximate but with so many planets in Pisces, she was definitely out there, especially for that era.

Pisces stellium people are definitely in the social and psychological outer limits! <g> Fagan was very fond of the charts of Algernon Swinburne and Charles Baudelaire and published or referenced them frequently. Bradley wrote a fascinating article on Richard Francis Burton. And then, of course, there are Eistein, the infamous Landru, Joseph Campbell.

Even Sandra Day O'Connor, who seemed sufficiently well-behaved in public, was a pioneer - and probably wasn't nearly so "driving between the lines" in her private life.

Some interesting people on that list, I’ll check them out.
