Though the French Revolution is the biggest thing happening worldwide, for the U.S. specifically the city of Washington is being built as the new capital, including George Washington dedicating the cornerstone of the Capitol Building. The first Congress opens in the new building (pass the 11th Amendment). Eli Whitney got a patent for the cotton gin.

Period dominated by the War of 1812 (an extension of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe).

Dominated by WW II and the flu pandemic (with first examples in January 1918; reached pandemic proportions in June to August). Armistice in November. 18th Amendment creating Prohibition was ratified 1/16 at the last pass.

Notably marked the time of our entry into WW II and national fervor for it. (On 5/21, a day before the first pass, a German submarine sank the U.S. ship SS Robin Moor, causing FDR to proclaim "an unlimited national emergency."

Early months of JFK's administration with, among other things, America on a strong surge absorbed by the Space Race.
