1811 New Madrid Earthquake
Posted: Wed Aug 09, 2017 2:13 pm
December 16, 1811, 2:15 AM, 36N24, 89W36
[NOTE: Listed also as 8:15 UT which, with LMT in force, would not have been 2:15 AM locally; but the difference doesn't matter for current purposes]
A series of severe earthquakes rocked the Missouri bootheel, near New Madrid, MO, in late 1811 and early 1812. It all began with a quake somewhere between 7.5 and 7.9 in magnitude on the above date, and a 7.4 quake in the same place exactly six hours later. No stronger quake has ever been recorded anywhere in the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains. (The first quakes' epicenter was actually in what is now Arkansas.)
Structural damage was slight, mostly because the area was mostly empty. Later quakes occurred January 23 (9:00 AM, 7.3-8.0) and February 7 (3:45 AM, 7.5-8.0), followed by numerous aftershocks (including one December 17 0:00 AM, that was about M7).
The quake came to my attention because the upcoming solar eclipse path reaches its peak directly over the same area, which is still considered geologically unstable.
