Though the damage was most severe in Mexico City (and this should probably be the point of study), the epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean at 18.35N, 102.39W (18N21.0, 102W23.4). The magnitude 8.0 quake was followed the next day by aftershock of 7.5.

The death toll is usually given as about 10,000 people. About 5,000 bodies were found. Structural damage was vast on the west side of Mexico City. But the number is widely believed to be double that (with some estimates reaching 30,000).

I want to redo these for the epicenter instead of Mexico City. - It turns out that this is quite exceptional! I'm not sure why it surprised me... since, actually, my other examples are usually at least slightly better for the epicenter than for the place of maximum human effect. This has gone from a relatively poor showing to quite a good one... with the Bridge being a bit stunning.
