Club Cinq-Sept fire

Post by Jim Eshelman »

November 1, 1970, about 1:40 AM, near St. Laurent du Pont, Isere, France
45N22'59", 5E42'37"

A blaze, consequent to numerous fire safety violations, killed 146 people (mostly young adults) and "shocked the French nation" (Wikipedia). As we see in so many of these high-fatality club fires, this one occurred on a night they were unusually packed. The fire was reportedly started by a tossed match that ignited a flammable (foam-filled) seat in the club. Most of the furnishings were equally flammable, so the fire spread rapidly. Very few of the 180 people present escaped.
