USA Mundane Forecast
for the four weeks beginning April 8, 2018
If you are unfamiliar with the methods and interpretations of Sidereal mundane astrology, see my free book Sidereal Mundane Astrology. (A link to the current edition can always be found near the top of the Publications sub-forum.) For standard interpretations, see Chapter 7.
LONG-TERM (Solar Ingress) PATTERNS
The 12 months beginning January 15, 2018 are a stronger, less forgiving version of 2016: unstable, revolutionary, revising, remapping, anti-establishment, and often anti-government. Washington's Capsolar has Pluto square Ascendant (0°08'), and Uranus on Westpoint (0°42'). A spirit of revolution assaults current systems, tearing at iconic structures. Victory in the 2018 elections will tend to fall to whomever can present himself or herself as the greater rebel.
PLUTO signals high-impact events that sever connections. Mainstream and counter-establishment sensibilities confront each other. Events are fiercely political, such as leader crises, financial crises, and severing historic relations. Natural disasters include hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods. URANUS signals explosions (literal or metaphorical); sudden rupture, shock, surprise, and overflowing normal boundaries and limitations. Expect disclosures and revelations, surprise attacks, changes in leadership, protests, revolts, and their suppression.
Changes in foreign relations are a certainty with a foreground SUN-VENUS-URANUS. Venus-Uranus also signals shifting social values, including increased liberty in Venus matters. What would 2018's version of legalizing same-sex marriage be? Uranus and Pluto insist on startling us with the unlikely and unconceived. "Culture wars" kick up more intensely for the midterm elections. The voice of rebellion is concentrated on those in the highest office.
For the whole world, MOON CONJOINS MERCURY and SATURN. While Moon-Jupiter aspects in recent Capsolars brought economic recovery, expect the opposite from Moon-Saturn. Recession is not unthinkable. Capsolars had close Moon-Saturn aspects in 1819, 1837, and 2008, which should concern students of American money crises. Its record for violent inhumanity is heart-stopping. Climate destabilization will escalate faster in 2018 than in previous years, with tragic, life-smashing consequences.
From Mercury + Saturn, expect worldwide restrictions, delays, failures, and calamity relating to transportation and communication breakdowns. Communication fails for technical reasons and because people stop listening to each other. Data integrity is increasingly doubted: Cybersecurity becomes a greater priority than cyber-expansion. Commerce is interrupted: More newspapers go out of business, and more small businesses close their doors. Information flow is interrupted and rationed. Moon-Mercury keeps our attention on the media which, itself, is much of the story. Moon-Saturn signals hardship, narrowing, sacrifice, loss, and sadness, with little cause for celebration. Bereavement for widely beloved figures, deprivation and disappointment, destructive assaults by people and nature, and other forms of hardship focus primarily on alienation and divisiveness. It will be a good year for undertakers.
With Saturn in Sagittarius, internationalism, immigration, aviation, elitism, hierarchical economic separation, and missiles take up much of our headline space for 2018.
Finally, Washington has a Mars-Jupiter PVP conjunction. This furthers the concerns of financial crisis. It could be as slight as the government shutdown of 2013 or as ravaging as the market crash of 1929, but probably will be something between. Resources are squandered, stretched past capacity. Religious evangelism and other belief-driven enthusiasm and aggression accelerate. Bigots have louder voices. In nature, as in human affairs, expect stormy weather.
The Arisolar (April 14) is dormant for Washington, DC, but adds (until mid-July) a further edge of violence and hardship: Arisolar Moon squares Saturn (2°24' in eclipto) and Mars (a blisteringly tight 0°09' in mundo).
MEDIUM-TERM PATTERNS (The Bridge)
Transiting Pluto crosses Capsolar IC all month The individual Bridge zones all involve Mars or Saturn.
April 8-29 (with only a one-day gap on 4/16), Mars either crosses Cansolar Descendant or squares Capsolar Ascendant, marking a MARS-PLUTO zone. Especially after the 17th when Mars and Pluto transit the same ingress, expect violent, ferocious, even explosive unleashing of force (such as explosions, accidents, war-like aggression, mass shooting, earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and fires that release explosive force). The pair is broadly disrespectful of law, and harvests the consequences of accumulated stresses.
April 30, Saturn enters 1° conjunction with progressed Capsolar Moon. World wide, under this aspect we always experience a heightened frequency of acute, deadly tragedies. In past times, new ones have dominated headlines almost daily. The most acute time is April 30 to May 1, when Mars and Pluto simultaneously transit Capsolar angles while Saturn conjoins CapQ Moon, a MARS-SATURN-PLUTO zone. These two days are the center of severe crises and hurtful aggression.
Then, May 2-6, Mars pulls away to leave a SATURN-PLUTO zone. Besides the general severe expectations of the Saturn-Moon transit, Saturn + Pluto signals dramatic hardship, sometimes with an apocalyptic feel, and catastrophic disasters with profound feelings of irrevocable loss or separation. (Notice that we are entering America's tornado season.)
SHORT-TERM (Lunar Ingress) PATTERNS
Caplunar (Apr 8)
The Caplunar covers April 8 to May 6 (especially the first two weeks, April 8-22). This month, things will get very, very weird.
I say that, first, because the entire month is dominated by NEPTUNE, a planet essentially unrepresented in this year's stack of charts. Both the Caplunar and Canlunar have Neptune as their only angular planet, while the Arilunar is dormant; so, for nearly all month, Neptune is the chief force sitting atop the Capsolar's symbolism and its severe Mars and Saturn transits.
Angular Neptune always signals extreme excitement, whether happy or unhappy: the insanity of a crowd, as at a major sporting event or acting as a mob: madness, panic, confusion, uncertainty, disorientation, and a gripping sense of, “So, what happens now?”
That will likely be the prevailing question of the month: "What happens now?"
Specific types of events linked to angular Neptune include fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, and building collapses, plus deaths or resignation of leaders (which stir doubt and uncertainty), mass shootings, financial panic, and mobs of all types (whether mindless herd-torrents or waves of people driven by a shared vision).
And the month is even weirder - more "out there" and "beyond belief" - because Uranus and Pluto join Neptune in defining it. Moon squares Uranus 0°25' in mundo, and conjoins Pluto more widely. Follow the Bridge above to see the broader periods to which the public will be reacting.
April 11-12, CanQ angles cross ingress Saturn and Neptune, for the center of the worst days. (The Cansolar Venus-Neptune square is brought exactly to the angles, with Saturn at MC.)
Arilunar (Apr 15)
The Arilunar covers April 15-22. However, it is technically dormant: Its closest angularity is Uranus 3°04' from Descendant. These 3° thresholds are not precise, though I do expect the Caplunar to continue to dominate the week.
Uranus, though, will make its mark. Moon, Sun, and Uranus are all conjunct in the wider foreground, affecting the whole world just by their aspect. Moon conjunct Sun is closest (0°58'), so the time will feel like a "phase change," a time of shift. These changes are not gradual or subtle: For a week, we have a flavor of the startling, shifting, and rebellious. That this overlaps a Mars-Pluto Bridge zone makes it even explosive.
As the week begins with CapQ angles touching Uranus and Saturn, all the Arilunar Uranian phenomena should be obvious right out of the gate. The Capsolar's Moon-Mercury-Saturn crosses angles over the course of the week. On 4/18, a Sun-Uranus conjunction crosses CapQ IC, with Moon-Mercury-Saturn also angular; Sun suggests the president is directly involved in the main events of the five days centered on the 18th. (Saturn and Neptune continue to plague the CanQ angles for several days.)
Canlunar (Apr 22)
The Canlunar covers April 22-29. Once more, Neptune is the only angular planet (0°19' from Ascendant). The only other important feature is a wide Moon-Pluto opposition. The interpretation is not significantly different from that of the Caplunar.
Sun and Saturn conjointly cross CapQ angles on the 22nd and 23rd: Historically, such crossings are bad for those in power.
Liblunar (Apr 28)
The Liblunar covers April 28 to May 13 (since the next Caplunar is dormant). After nearly a month of Neptune, it shakes us out of our slumber with dramatic aggressive, even violent intensity. Pluto conjoins Mars (1°11') on IC, signifying ferocious and possibly explosive unleashing of force. The aspect is broadly disrespectful of law. Cumulative stresses (psychological or physical) reach their breaking point.
Moon squares Mars in the foreground (2°32'). This intensifies fury and (if operating typically) adds destruction and loss of life.
This all occurs under a volatile Capsolar, with hurtful Moon aspects in the new Arisolar, while transiting Saturn conjoins Capsolar Moon. One dislikes continuing to predict hardship, hatred, destruction, struggle, and loss of life, but those are the shared characteristics of the time. Were a milder expression to win out (since nothing is partile, though many things are close), one still must expect heightened conflict and (especially with the Arisolar) outright hatred, with opposing forces contending aggressively on, perhaps, gun control issues.
One final factor is the Moon/Mercury midpoint on the horizon (0°36'). This is much less dramatic than the rest of the chart; it is difficult to know what to say. Generally, it means much media involvement and close scrutiny, but that's a foregone conclusion if anything like the above occurs. If there is violence, it will have a strong tactical character, whether directly military or by the nature of an assailant's preparation: planned, well-executed attacks rather than emotional lashing out. For this two weeks, watch carefully for strategy behind such actions.
Sun and Pluto occupy CapQ angles together May 4, so this (plus or minus two days) is when these events concentrate in Washington.
