Mount Vesuvius 1906

Post by Jim Eshelman »

Though Mount Vesuvius (40N49, 14E26) is best known for its 79 AD eruption, one more modern one - 112 years ago today, on April 7, 1906 - destroyed Naples and surrounding communes, and killed over 100 people. Typical of this volcano, the eruption was violent and severe, and spewed more lava than any historic Vesuvius eruption.

Contemporary reports estimated much more loss of life. An Italian newspaper article I found, dated April 9, said, "Reports of fatalities consequent the eruption of Mount Vesuvius are coming in. According to information received late tonight probably five hundred lives were lost. It is said that more than two hundred perished in the district of San Giuseppe Vesuviano, while from the ruins of a church which collapsed, owing to the weight of ashes on the roof, forty-nine bodies were extricated."

Picking a time is probably more academic than anything else, but the critical time seems to be 10 PM on the 7th. (One could also pick 8 PM the night before; and signals of eruption started on the 4th. But the critical collapse late on the 7th crossed the line.)

Be interesting to take a look at the next few years for that area. Cause it's alive.
The first part of this is just ooh vulcanologists! but there's some pretty interesting stuff further along. http://discovermagazine.com/2017/nov/fields--of-fire
