November 1, 1755, 9:40 AM, Lisbon, Portugal (M = 8.5-9.0)
The Great Lisbon Earthquake, including its consequent fires and tsunami, nearly destroyed Lisbon and surrounding areas. Though the epicenter was in the Atlantic about 120 miles SW of Cape St. Vincent (at 36N, 11W), its great impact was Lisbon, killing somewhere between 10,000 and 100,000 people just around Lisbon. This accelerated political and social tensions. Economic damages were between a third and a half of Portugal's GDP.
The fires were caused by the unusually numerous lit candles all over the city for All Saints' Day. Hundreds died solely from asphyxiation from the smoke.
