When you do synastry from the perspective of the relationship as a transiting event, do you relocate the chart to the partner's birthplace, or keep the natal location?

Both.
I give natal priority, because that's with you no matter where you go, but you can't miss the natal.
Marion's local Ascendant is about 4' from my Moon where we live, which is a very big deal; but the relationship wouldn't be worth much (especially for travelling) if we didn't have plenty without it being anchored to a location which is neither of our birth places.

It's an incredible tool to learn which parts of a relationship are yours vs theirs. So helpful for boundaries and a clearer sense of identity.
E.g., I ran a chart for a person I had a crush on years ago but would never had acted on. I assumed it was one sided, but the chart said otherwise. I texted and they confessed they had a crush on me back then too! It was so liberating and validating. Or another relationship, where I felt used, and sure enough the Saturn Sun aspect showed up.
Without this, my Neptunian paranoia would be soaring.
