USA Mundane Forecast
for the four weeks beginning FEBRUARY 2, 2019

If you are unfamiliar with the methods and interpretations of Sidereal mundane astrology, please see my free book Sidereal Mundane Astrology. (A link to the current edition can be found near the top of the Publications sub-forum.) For standard interpretations, see Chapter 8 of the current (16th) Edition.

LONG-TERM (Solar Ingress) PATTERNS
For the United States, the 12 months beginning January 15, 2019 will resemble the 12 that came before them. Capsolars for 2018 and 2019 both have Uranus, Pluto, and Sun as the three strongest planets. Both have a powerful Mercury-Saturn combination supported by Mars-Jupiter. Where they differ is that 2019 has more Sun in the mix - the focus is more on the president (however hard that may be to believe) - and is missing the Venus-Uranus elements that drove so many changes in international relationships. Also, the Mercury-Saturn elements are concentrated on the U.S. in 2019 and not shared with the world as in 2018.

Uranus is on IC (2°36') and Sun on Eastpoint (1°53'). Their square is only 0°08' wide (in RA) and is the most important aspect of the year. Sun-Uranus signals startling events, which, historically, has included surprise attacks, sudden changes in leadership, and technology breakthroughs.

URANUS is most angular (2°36' from IC). Explosion is the most characteristic idea (whether literal or metaphorical). Its unique contributions are sudden rupture or eruption, shock, surprise, and overflowing normal boundaries and limits. Disclosures and revelations are common. Uranian events often have profound social impact to the point of defining the character of an era.

SUN is also closely angular (1°53' from EP), concentrating attention on the head of state or the government in general. Sun is involved for increased government intervention, or heightened, front-and-center perception of government’s presence in people’s lives. Sun's aspects to Uranus and Pluto infer rebellion against present leadership and a wide rejection of prevailing political views. (Sun-Pluto always has an element of disrespect for, or rejecting, the law or those forces that create and enforce the law. Sometimes this means removing those in power.)

MERCURY CONJOINS SATURN (2°46') in the foreground. From this we expect restrictions, delays, failures, or calamity relating to transportation and communication. Communication fails for technical reasons and because people don't listen to each other. Expect further economic narrowing and backtracking on economic recovery: Commerce is interrupted: More newspapers go out of business. More small businesses (especially retail outlets) close their doors. Information flow is interrupted and rationed. Data integrity is increasingly doubted; cybersecurity remains a greater priority than cyber-expansion. With Saturn still in Sagittarius all year, immigration, aviation, elitism, hierarchical economic separation, and missiles dominate headlines.

Reinforcing the message of economic crisis, Washington's Capsolar has a MARS-JUPITER mundane square (2°07') that doesn't exist ecliptically; i.e., it is geographically distinctive to Washington. This could be as slight as a few more government shutdowns or as ravaging as a market crash, but probably will be something between. Resources are squandered, stretched past their capacity. Belief-driven enthusiasm and aggression accelerate. Bigots have louder voices. In nature, as in human affairs, expect stormy weather.

Mercury also conjoins Pluto (2°32' in mundo). Mundanely, Mercury sits 0°30' from the Saturn/Pluto midpoint. This anticipates major collisions of information, communication, and ideas. One sense in which this is positive politically is that it suggests that opposing factions in Congress will again be engaging passionately, unlike the tepid, rigid polarization of recent years. Investigations drill deeply into untapped data to disclose information that changes the prevailing paradigm, significantly reframing how people think about things.

Another expression of this "collision" motif, against which we must guard, is in the realm of cyber attacks, including the remote undermining of critical communication, management, and cyber-control networks. This will be a significant theme of 2019.

MEDIUM-TERM PATTERNS (The Bridge)
All month, Pluto is on a Capsolar angle, with Uranus also there for the first few days and Saturn (aspected by progressed Cansolar Moon) for about half the month. Then, during two concentrated periods, Mars joins the mix. These longer trends prime for significant events characteristic of the combined planet natures as follows:
  • Feb 2-6 Mars Saturn Uranus Pluto
  • Feb 7-12 Mars Saturn Pluto
  • Feb 13-14 Saturn Pluto
  • Feb 15-25 Pluto
  • Feb 26-Mar 2 Mars Pluto

SHORT-TERM (Lunar Ingress) PATTERNS

Liblunar (Jan 26)
The Liblunar covers January 26 to February 10 (due to the dormant Feb 2 Caplunar). In a sharp departure from prior weeks, it startles us out of our comfortable indulgences with news and revelations. With Mercury and both luminaries involved, these events are kept right before our eyes, right in the spotlight.

What will the events be? It's hard to guess with Uranus so powerfully placed, because they are sure to surprise us. Most likely the main event will center on data, disclosures, and important communications, and on the president directly (given Sun's angularity and close aspect with Moon).

Other aspects mostly reiterate what I've already said: Sun-Uranus describes the startling and explosive, Moon-Uranus describes shifting condition requiring rapid adaptation and reorientation, Sun-Mercury and Moon-Mercury (besides introducing transportation and commerce themes) demand headlines or otherwise center on documents, paperwork, or their digital equivalent. Mars squares Ascendant along most of the Texas-Mexico border, so violent, deadly confrontations resembling war can be expected in that region.

Although the February 2 Caplunar is dormant, its lunar aspects trigger events of violence or the unleashing of great force, which makes the Liblunar's second week more eruptive than its first. Worldwide, Moon squares Mars (2°40' ) and conjoins Pluto (3°18').

CapQ Ascendant crosses Sun 2/4 and squares Uranus 2/8-9, when the biggest surprises or shifts will occur. In the CanQ, transiting Mars (squared by Pluto) conjoins Ascendant all week, which (in addition to sponsoring more and larger fires) suggests sustained hostility if not outright violence. Feb 4-7 brings Saturn to CanQ MC and Uranus to its Ascendant with Mars still close.

Arilunar (Feb 10)
The Arilunar covers February 10-17 and unlocks the volatile potential of the dormant Caplunar. A triple Moon-Mars-Uranus conjunction is foreground with Mars and Uranus closely square MC. Mars also squares non-angular Pluto (2°10' in mundo). It has all the symbolism of the Caplunar but brought to the angles.

Mars-Uranus is explosive, bursting with startling violence. Expect at least psychological “bombshells” (and maybe physical ones), symbols of fire + explosion and surprise attacks. Pluto's square amplifies the ferocity and unleashing of force, adding an element of disrespect for the law. It is difficult for people to get along and find agreement.

Moon, least foreground of the three, likely adds context. For example, the described events may occur in public places where herds of people congregate, or may center around children. Specific possibilities are numerous, especially since Mars-Uranus aspects, angular Mars, angular Uranus, and Moon aspects to Mars and Uranus are all among the most common factors for disasters in general, especially those with high property damage.

February 10-12, CanQ MC crosses one or another Pluto, delivering a hard smack to get our attention (with Asc square Mars on the 11th). On 2/16, Sun, Jupiter, and Uranus come to angles, centering attention squarely on the president with a startling eruption of news.

Canlunar (Feb 17)
The Canlunar covers February 17-23. Moon's opposition to Pluto is quite close for Washington (less than 2° in mundo), so there is a palpable sense of increased intensity. Our attention is fixed unflinching like that of the colloquial deer caught in headlights, or of one rendered immobile by the headlight of an oncoming train.

Mercury is the one tightly angular planet, 0°20' from square Ascendant. It conjoins Neptune (which is not itself angular). While any of the primary Mercury themes could be the center of attention (communication, transportation, logistics and strategy, and especially the centricity of the news media, among other possibilities), the closeness of this angularity suggests something decisive and concrete, such as a document - a single written instrument that binds our attention, for example. (Otherwise it is likely a straightforward transportation or communication theme.)

Mercury conjunct Neptune breeds confusion, disorientation, and bad choices but, especially, poses uncertainty about the future. Usually, on everyone's mind is the question, “What’s next?” or, “What happens now?”

On 2/19, CanQ EP crosses Uranus which is partile conjunct Mars, so at least one major bombshell will startle us, with aftershocks echoing until the end of the week.

Liblunar (Feb 23)
The Liblunar covers February 23 to March 2. I think I have never seen a lunar ingress like this one - so divided and oppositional in its indications - which might mean that we are in for something outside of our normal experience. On one hand, Jupiter closely rises (1°59'), with its only aspect a benign-to-favorable square (0°34') to a non-angular Mercury. On the other hand, Moon forms mundane squares to a Venus-Saturn-Pluto triple conjunction. (Venus-Pluto is 0°10' wide ecliptically.) This suggests soul-mortifying grief and loss, if not outright inhumanity.

I only know one category of event with these planetary themes intermixed. Jupiter joins Moon-Saturn and Moon-Pluto for massacres, the intentional slaughter of huge numbers of people (sometimes of a genocidal scope) by a government or other institution. I do not seriously believe this could happen today in or by the United States. Nonetheless, it gives a starting point in understanding what this one-week chart might mean. One further clue: The same stream of event may continue into the following month, since the March 2 Caplunar has a rising Saturn-Pluto conjunction (reinforced by Moon and Venus) square Mars on IC. Therefore, we now enter several weeks of severity and cruelty: This week is preamble.

It could be simply a declaration of war: Venus-Pluto marks dramatic changes in relationships, including starting a war. More generally, it shows a final, stark severing of emotional ties, as in loss of loved ones and the destruction of homes and community, on a scale that stuns one’s sensibilities. - Other aspects in the set say much the same. Standard interpretations for Moon-Saturn, Moon-Pluto, and Venus-Saturn aspects recycle similar themes of love + loss, sacrifice and sadness, separations lined with poignant emotional intensity, and even hate, remorse, and alienation. In this company, Moon-Venus cannot be protective and only underlines that what is lost is something profoundly dear to us.

Within this pattern, Jupiter rising cannot mean that this is an unusually good month where people feel blessed. It does surely mean, though, that some people consider this week's events to be a significant "win," or that they find a way to profit from it in money or esteem. If the losses are from a fire or natural disaster, they will come from excess or over-reach, or in a setting of festivities (like the many cases of club fires made more tragic by extreme over-packing). Most likely, though, it means that the emotional tragedies will benefit or reward an elite few (political, economic, or aristocratic elite).

Mercury-Jupiter amidst negative events nearly always show one party’s “win-lose” victory at the cost of another’s loss. It has also occurred for well-planned, well-executed terrorist attacks.

As astrologers, we have much to learn from observing events this week with one eye on the news and the other eye on this Liblunar.

In the midst of this, Quotidian MC crossing Venus 2/26 provides a day of small blessing or relief. In the CanQ, 2/23 transiting Mars (exactly on Q EP) squares Cansolar Mars for a day of violence. On 2/28 CanQ MC crosses ingress Mars, a similar burst of Mars themes.

Trump Watch

PROGRESSIONS & TRANSITS
President Trump continues several progressions this month, a mix of powerful positive and negative patterns. However, this month a powerfully positive and protective influence peaks as the strongest negative progression wanes. Important continuing progressions include:
  • p Saturn conjunct p Midheaven
  • p Mars sextile r Pluto
  • p Venus conjunct r Jupiter (p Venus also trines r Uranus; p Sun aspects Venus-Jupiter)
Progressed Saturn conjunct progressed MC, which has marked his first two years as president with ever-increasing threats to his status, continues only through mid-March. Meanwhile, progressed Sun semi-square natal Jupiter is exact this month, peaking February 21, and must be considered the dominant progressed influence. It is positive, victorious, and protective, giving even a royal, blessed demeanor, its weakness being in arrogant over-estimation of one's singular importance. For a time, it may seem to him that nothing bad can touch him; but a Saturn transit to this Sun-Jupiter (see below) is a persistent battering at his city's gates.

Pluto's transits to President Trump's progressed SSR Moon continues all month, marking a background state of crisis, emotional confrontation, and shifts in relationships. Jupiter sets a protective umbrella by opposition to natal Uranus until the 14th, then conjoining his Moon beginning 2/23. He will need the latter protection, because Saturn aspects his Jupiter and progressed Sun from the 2/25 onward, usually a mark of deflated esteem and power.

SIDEREAL LUNAR RETURN (Jan 31)
Venus and Jupiter rise, conjunct Trump's natal Moon and opposite his Sun-Uranus. Natal Jupiter is foreground, too. There are a couple of sour apples, including afflictions to that natal Jupiter, but they are small compared to the rest.

This is a Lunar Return of winning. Lots of wonderful winning. Really big winning. Lots and lots of winning. That it occurs under a weekly ingress promising surprises, under quotidians typical of explosive force, is not comforting.

Of the many interlocking aspects, the closest involve transiting Venus (0°56' past Asc), natal Sun (0°45' past Dsc), and natal Moon (2°17' past Asc). Venus opposes his Sun 0°11' in mundo and his Moon 1°21' in mundo. His natal Sun and Moon are opposite within 1°32' in the SLR mundoscope.

These aspects describe a happy man, even a happy man in love (though perhaps most in love with himself). Venus opposite his Sun, social and playful, shows him feeling good about himself. He receives flattering attention and compliments, possibly sexual but surely affectionate. Similarly, Venus conjunct his Moon shows him receiving affectionate (possibly sexual) attention. He is cuddly, gentle, and loving, enjoys others, has feelings close to the surface, and does things that dispel his stress.

Coexisting with this are difficult aspects. Transiting Saturn is about 1° from square Midheaven, showing the reality of the demands and criticisms of the world at his immediate doorstep. His natal Jupiter (4° east of MC) is squared by this Saturn and opposed by Mars: Both show an assault on the Jupiter side of his being, such as his wealth, reputation, and esteem. These will be felt, though it seems it will not disrupt his underlying happiness if he is in or near Washington.

Background inquiries and confrontations persist. Transiting Sun, background in the SLR, conjoins Mercury (0°54') and opposes natal Pluto (0°09'). He really does have a strong urge to "get away from it all" this month.

SIDEREAL DEMI-LUNAR RETURN (Feb 14)
Transiting Jupiter is 0°00' from IC in the Demi-Lunar, a powerful statement in the context of a splendid full SLR (above). It conjoins his Moon, opposes his Uranus, and more widely opposes his Sun, all of which are closely angular.

For two weeks, it looks like everything is going his way and nothing can touch him. His actions are blessed, his mood elevated, his originality hailed and praised, and his popularity uplifted. With transiting Sun concurrently square natal Midheaven, the full glory of his Sun-Jupiter progression shines for a while.

Lunar Returns like this are rare blessings. Under them, life feels very good.

SIDEREAL LUNAR RETURN (Feb 27)
NOTE 2/6/19: See viewtopic.php?f=46&t=2838&p=21802#p21802
With this February 27 Lunar Return, a hammer drops, a blow is felt. Transiting Mars squares Midheaven and also squares natal Pluto on IC. Anger, sex, dominance, violence or other “charged” issues arise. Threats loom. Stress mounts. Cornered, one looks for an escape route.

Mars-Pluto months are suspenseful and tense, with an air of crisis or emergency. Most often, one is forced to take responsibility (or blame) for one's own actions. Often one's own rules are abandoned in the face of pressing circumstances, in a spirit of lawlessness where practical necessity wins out over formality.

Within these pressures, he still has friends and advantage (Jupiter conjunct his Moon 0°30', Venus opposite his Venus 0°49'), yet his wealth, well-being, and esteem are under assault (Saturn square his Jupiter 0°51').

Feb 27 SLR for Vietnam

Donald Trump's February 27 might occur in Da Nang, Vietnam, since he has announced he is meeting Li'l Kim there on February 27 or 28. If so, it is a relatively inactive SLR with some of the same factors as the chart for Washington but much less intensity. Here is the breakdown:

r Pluto on MC +2°57'
t Mars on Dsc +7°36'
t Mars sq. r Pluto 2°10'

Therefore, the same aspect dominates as in Washington. The same interpretation would apply except watered down a bit with less overall intensity. (His Pluto remains strong, but transiting Mars has lost its edge.)

Additionally there are three background partile aspects of note.
t Jupiter conj. r Moon 0°30'
t Venus op. r Venus 0°49'
t Saturn sq. r Jupiter 0°51'

Here is the original forecast for the Washington SLR for comparison:

Since I wrote this, it's been announced for Hanoi, not Da Nang. This still brings the same Mars transit to natal Pluto to the angles.

It seems no matter where he goes, a hammer is going to fall.

The quote is part of the yearly forecast, based on the Capsolar because it's coming to light now.

See the article below. This is quite serious stuff, and is a direct hit for the above forecast. For those who don't know the tech side, I made the forecast triggered by the word "collision" for Mercury-Pluto because some of the circumstances I described are called "packet collisions" or "data collision" - something far more likely when there is a failure of the international DNS system.

Chicago votes for a new mayor today. A quick glance at the maps above shows a Venus line going right through Chicago in the Caplunar. I don't know what that means (and haven't been following the election, candidates, etc.), but might be obvious symbolism tomorrow when we know the outcome and read the commentary.

Trump is in Vietnam this morning, so will probably be in Hanoi for his SLR - but please help me keep track.

Whether in Washington or Hanoi, the main SLR feature is transiting Mars square natal Pluto on the angles. Here is the finer breakdown of the SLR for Hanoi.

r Pluto on MC +0°45'
t Mars on Dsc +3°45'
-- t Mars sq. r Pluto 2°10'
----------------------------------
t Jupiter conj. r Moon 0°30'
t Venus op. r Venus 0°49'
t Saturn sq. r Jupiter 0°51'

I'm attempting to assess the last four weeks to see how the techniques performed. The obvious "win" is that the forecast for Trump couldn't have been better for the nature of circumstances and events plus precision timing of them. In particular, the body of the month was positive and show-boating of him, then, beginning the eve (and continuing into the firsts full day) of his current Mars-Pluto SLR, the double slam hit of Michael Cohen's explosive public testimony and the collapsed North Korean summit in Hanoi.

For the nation as a whole - the ingress-based forecast - I'm still sorting out the effects. As we've seen for several years, the Capsolar by itself does remarkably well. Most of the news falls somewhere in that one "master chart's" domain.

The Liblunar was a fair portrayal of the push to refund the government in the first week, though my forecast hit nothing specific in that, just the general deadline; and, while the border wall was quite an inflamed discussion at that point, my very pointed prediction of violent, deadly confrontations along Texas' southern border fell flat. If those Mars and Saturn lines meant anything, they were just aggressive attention to the region.

Oh, I almost forgot (how could I?): Violence or no, there was a national emergency declared at that exact border. This seems frustratingly silly to me, that we could have an emergency declared in that area that matches "emergency" planets, even when there is no real emergency (it's all fiction)! It's really hard to do an accurate forecast with this kind of plasticity :)

And that brings us to the very interesting Liblunar...

The 2/23 Liblunar (please review above) was one of the hardest charts to interpret in a while. It has Jupiter rising and Moon square Venus-Saturn-Pluto. I can't say that anything closely fit my forecast, but it was indeed one of the most bizarre and intense weeks of the year. Three stories dominated the week: (1) The Cohen public testimony. (2) The Hanoi summit with North Korea. (3) Horrible suffering and loss from severe weather across much of the nation including flooding.

For some reason I'm grumbly about accepting the likely truth that the last point (#3), which includes horrible rain, overflowing river banks in many parts of the country, and severe flooding, is the outcome, but I think it mostly is. Pints #1 and #2 match the chart - national impact that shocked and disturbed much of the nation (though not meeting expectations of diplomacy in Hanoi with the rising Jupiter square Mercury). However, the combination of Jupiter with those Moon aspects, including the community-wasting 10' Venus-Pluto conjunction, is probably showing the severe flooding of the Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee River valleys and, separate from the others, of Sonoma County, California.

That a national chart for Washington can show this for a three thousand mile breadth of continent is still mind-bending but not all that unusual. The individual areas had their own charts showing local impact, but the fact that weather (not just psychological tone, but the weather!) across the full width of the continental U.S. is reflected so well in a chart for Washington is an example of astrology's occasional surrealism.

How did the astrologer do with all of this? Well, no better than imperfectly. I was smart not to claim to know what specific events would spill out. I suppose most of the descriptive adjectives I used are fitting, but the general direction was off (my imagination wasn't good enough to anticipate this).

Or at least, that's how it's looking to me. How is it looking to you?

Here it is March 2nd and in an hour or so we have a Caplunar…. Positioned in Washington D.C. and in combination with Trump's relocated Natal to the White House we see a remarkable day ahead.

T Mars sq N Pluto
T Jupiter Con N Moon
T Saturn Con N Vertex

Saturn Conjunct the ASC of the Caplunar
Mars Conjunct the IC of the Caplunar
SNode conjunct the Moon(Caplunar)

Numerous aspects exist besides the ones mentioned above...
Later in the day Transiting Mars will exactly square Trumps natal Pluto as it(Mars) nears conjunction with the MC....

The President should experience significant hurt not only today but also during this Caplunar… This week has demonstrated a turning point for the reign of Trump... Though his end seems near I think we are simply engaged within the process which has many more scenes to be played.

So many other charts to be cast.....

Among the things we've learned with high confidence over the last five or six years is that ingresses don't interact directly with individual natal charts. However, you've correctly caught some of Trump's transits at the moment (independent of the ingresses), which also appear with great prominence in his current lunar return.
Saturn Conjunct the ASC of the Caplunar
Mars Conjunct the IC of the Caplunar
And Mars-Saturn in partile mundane square. All of this is itemized in the forecast for the new Sidereal month

Already angular in his current SLR, both for Washington and for where it set up in Hanoi.

Since Moon has entered Capricorn... on to the new month!

Often one's own rules are abandoned in the face of pressing circumstances, in a spirit of lawlessness where practical necessity wins out over formality...
An editorial cartoonist has memorialized the week started by this Mars-Pluto SLR with the following image:

Jim Eshelman wrote: Fri Mar 01, 2019 7:52 am The Liblunar was a fair portrayal of the push to refund the government in the first week, though my forecast hit nothing specific in that, just the general deadline; and, while the border wall was quite an inflamed discussion at that point, my very pointed prediction of violent, deadly confrontations along Texas' southern border fell flat. If those Mars and Saturn lines meant anything, they were just aggressive attention to the region.

Oh, I almost forgot (how could I?): Violence or no, there was a national emergency declared at that exact border.
It seems this forecast about the border was not much of a miss after all. During February, there was greatly accelerated conflict and engagement between armed, uniformed U.S. personnel and people attempting to cross the border.

After tapering, in Obama's last year and Trump's first two years to a nearly all-time low, the number of attempted border crossings (and especially the number of apprehensions for illegal crossing) suddenly surged in February. Thousands more arrests were made (a total of 76,000). The border condition - just due to the month of February - is now being classified as "at a breaking point," requiring much additional staffing.

There was also illegal clear-cutting through bird sanctuaries, butterfly preserves and land protected as historical sites. Government contractors bring in a big machine that literally chews through everything and don't say anything, just start grinding away. By the time the sheriff can get there to stop them, they're done and the land is bare (ready to flood and be washed away.) This is supposedly in preparation for The Wall, but it's clearly not, since once the land is bare, it becomes unstable, and unsuitable for supporting anything, much less a concrete wall. This is revenge for not allowing "someone" to use it in his campaign ads.

I wanted to point out how closely Feb 14-27 matches Trump's approval bump in this aggregated approval rating graph:

That's pretty cool!

Jupiter 0°00' from a Lunar Return angle should be good for something nice! :)
