August 21, 2007, 3:30 CDT, Costa Maya region, Quintana Roo, Mexico (18N43, 87W43 near the state capital, Chetumal 18N30 88W18, where the storm "wreaked havoc")

As a Category 5 storm it made first landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula August 21.

45 deaths (in ten countries) were caused directly or indirectly by the hurricane, with $1.66 billion in damages. It reached sustained winds of 175 mph. - Possibly it should be studied for the Caribbean islands where it caused the most damage (especially Haiti and Dominican Republic) since, though it hit Yucatan with the greatest force, it missed all the main population centers and caused no casualties and relatively little damage.

It's Yucatan landfall was "in Quintana Roos's Costa Maya region, 40 mi northeast of the border between Mexico and Belize." In Mexico, the 200-population town of Majahual was "totally destroyed."

(A perfect chart for floods, not so much for hurricanes. I'm curious if Jupiter strength will hold up as we go, since this was an area of no casualty and lesser damage.)
