Hurricane Wilma

Post by Jim Eshelman »

October 24, 2005, 6:30 AM EDT, Cape Romano, FL (25N51, 81W41)

"The most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Atlantic basin," and second most intense in the Western hemisphere. 87 deaths, $27.4 billion in damages, Category 5, winds up to 185 mph.

It made landfall as a Category 4 on October 21, 5:00 PM EDT, in Cozumel, Mexico, causing enormous damage to the Yucatan Peninsula, then at Cape Romano, FL as a Category 3 on October 24, 6:30 AM EDT. The greatest intensity was in Yucatan, but most of the deaths and damage were in the U.S. (62 deaths, $19 billion in damages). A secondary effect in Florida is that the sugar industry was strongly, negatively impacted for the year similar for citrus).

I probably should examine it for both Cozumel and the Florida Keys. In Florida, it was a Mars and Pluto storm.

Year: Capsolar {+1}
Pluto on Dsc 1°58'
Mercury, Venus, Mars widely angular
-- Mercury-Venus conj. 0°04' in mundo
-- Mars sq. non-angular Uranus 1°14' in mundo
Moon-Pluto sq. 1°56'

Bridge {+2}
t Uranus sq. Cansolar Asc 1°26'
t Mars sq. Cansolar MC 0°44'

Quarter: Libsolar {+1}
Pluto on Dsc 0°08'
Venus & Uranus more widely angular
Moon-Jupiter op. 1°46'

Month: Caplunar {+2}
Mars sq. Asc 0°10'
Neptune on WP 0°57'
Moon-Jupiter sq. 1°58'

Week: Arilunar {+2}
(Canlunar didn't occur until 5 hrs after landfall occurred. Arilunar in force.)
Mars sq. MC 0°56'
Mercury, Saturn, Neptune more widely angular
-- Mercury-Neptune sq. 1°42'
Moon-Sun op. 0°33' [high tide: was it an eclipse?]
Moon-Jupiter op. 3°19'

NOTE: The Canlunar occurred about 5 hours later. It's a destructive chart. I don't credit it with the storm, but certainly with the aftermath: Uranus 2°00' before MC, Pluto 5°25' before Dsc. The Arilunar, though, remains the better chart for the impact.

Day: Capsolar Transits {-2}
t Venus sq. s MC 1°12'

Day: Cansolar Quotidian & Transits {+2}
p MC op. p Moon 1°35'
------------------------------
t Uranus sq. s Asc 1°26'
t Mars sq. s MC 0°44'

Other items of interest
This occurred in eclipse season; for example, the Arilunar occurred the day of the October 17 partial lunar eclipse, which occurred soon after sunrise in Cozumel but with nothing super close to the angles. An annular solar eclipse occurred October 3, with even less to distinguish it for this location unless one examines it in azimuth, in which case the eclipse with Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are all aligned within about 2° of the prime vertical.

October 21, 2005, 5:00 PM EDT, Cozumel, Mexico

The storm struck Yucatan under a partile Moon-Pluto opposition on a day of a partile Sun-Jupiter conjunction, with a near-partile Mercury-Mars opposition. Nothing was on the angles. (There were notes on communications and transportation breakdowns in various articles on this - I need to include them when I write this up fully.)

Year: Capsolar {+2}
(It looks like a bomb exploded! - Which is probably how it looked & felt.)
Mars on WP 0°11'
Moon, Uranus, Pluto widely angular
-- Mars-Uranus sq. 1°29' in mundo
-- Moon-Pluto sq. 1°56'
Moon-Mercury sq. 0°44' in mundo
Moon-Venus sq. 0°44' in mundo
-- Mercury-Venus conj. 0°00' in mundo

NOTE: The Cansolar was also noteworthy: Neptune 1°57' before MC, Moon 2°04' past Dsc in the degree of her Fall.

Bridge {+3}
t Pluto conj. Capsolar Dsc 0°08'
t Neptune conj. Cansolar MC 0°21'
t Mars conj. Cansolar EP 0°47'

Quarter: Libsolar {+2}
(Again, this is a bit more like a bomb exploding than the usual hurricane. Also note the implications for the tourist trade and the tourist-dense areas around Cancun hit.)
Uranus on MC 0°09'
-- Moon-Uranus sq. 1°05' PVP
Venus on WP 0°20'
Pluto more widely foreground
Moon-Jupiter op. 1°57' in mundo

Month: Caplunar {+2}
Neptune sq. MC 0°41', 1°57' from Dsc
Saturn on EP 0°50'
Mars widely foreground
Moon-Jupiter sq. 1°58'

Week: Arilunar {+3}
Neptune on IC 0°26'
Mercury on Asc 0°55'
-- Mercury-Neptune sq. 0°29' in mundo
Mars on WP 1°47'
Saturn more widely foreground
-- Mercury-Saturn sq. 2°57'
Moon-Sun op. 0°33'
Moon-Jupiter op. 3°19'

Day: Capsolar Quotidian & Transits {+1 / +2 = +2}
p Asc. sq. t Venus 0°57', p Mars 1°34'
------------------------------------------------
t Pluto conj. s Dsc 0°08'
t Moon conj. s Asc 1°01'
-- Moon-Pluto op. 1°07'
t Venus op. s EP 1°02'
-- t Venus conj. s Mars 0°51' in RA

Day: Cansolar Transits {+3}
t Neptune conj. s MC 0°21'
t Mars conj. s EP 0°47'
t Mercury op. s EP 1°29'
-- Me/Ma = EP 0°21'

Other Items of Interest
The October 17 partial lunar eclipse was quite concentrated for Cozumel (and, thus, for Yucatan in general), falling 4° from the horizon with Jupiter (conjunct Sun, opposite Moon) 0°17' from Ascendant. Similarly, the October 3 annular solar eclipse had Pluto 1°24' off IC for the region.
