May 3, 1481, 3:00 AM, Rhodes, Greece

On the Greek isle of Rhodes, a magnitude 7.1 quake occurred in the middle of the night, igniting a small tsunami (with consequent flooding), killing about 30,000 people. Rhodes experienced a series of earthquakes from mid-March 1481 to January 1482, but this was the big one!

The quake occurred just as Saturn set, paran a Moon-Venus conjunction on IC.

Rhodes was fending off attacks by the Turks when this occurred. A measurement of the scope of damage from the earthquake is that the Kastello, or palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, had to be rebuild immediately.
