A fire alarm went off at 5:42 AM CDT at the Air Traffic Control Center in Aurora IL. Firemen arrived to find a contract employee of the FAA with burns and cuts that appear to have been a suicide attempt and multiple fires burning. All agencies agree this was not an act of terrorism, but a disgruntled employee.
The fire at the ATC Center shut down air traffic in most of the Midwest. Only flights that stay under 10,000 feet were unaffected. Well over 1500 flights were cancelled, not just in O'Hare and Midway (the two main Chicago airports - O'Hare is the busiest airport in the world) but across the US. Flights were starting to take off in the last hour, but so far it's just a trickle.
I live under a flight path and the skies haven't been this quiet since 9-11.
