Flood (run it for the flood chapter also) killed 423 people, damage $68 million. Dam weakening (cracks) observed in November. Rainfall on 12/2 caused water level to rise too fast, hitting its maximum level at noon 12/2. Request to release excess water was denied for hours, finally approved at 6 PM. The dam totally collapsed before they could release enough to ease the pressure. -- "Wall of water" 130 feet high, moving over 40 mph and bearing broken bricks and concrete of the dam, wiped out two villages, damaged Fréjus, and eventually emptied into the ocean. -- Details of damages in the article.
