An industrial-purpose dam burst, dumping 132 million gallons of "black waste water, cresting over 30 feet high, upon the residents of sixteen coal towns along Buffalo Creek Hollow." Rain had fallen "almost continuously" for days before the event, according to the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture, and History.
125 died, 1,121 injured, over 4,000 homeless, 507 houses were destroyed + 44 mobile homes; 273 homes were severely damaged, and 30 businesses, 1,000 cars and trucks, 10 bridges, and power, water, and telephone lies were destroyed according to the World History Project. Property damage was estimated at $50 million.
