Dec 29, 1876, abt 7:30 PM, near Ashtabula, OH (41N52'42'', 80W47'22'')
Worst U.S. rail accident in 19th century. A "derailment caused by the failure of a bridge... about 1,000 feet from the railroad station at Ashtabula." Bridge collapsed dumping a train (two locomotives hauling 11 cars) into the river. 92 died, 54 injured of 159 on-board. More details in the article including a consequent fire.
Neptune was exactly on MC when the collapse occurred, PVP square Moon on Antivertex. The star Acubens (Alpha Cancri) is exactly rising, a star Ptolemy characterized as like Saturn-Mercury; Ebertin thought it more like Mars. If these are valid, then either is fitting. The Solar Apex is exactly setting.
The charts look like general calamity charts - not particularly a transportation event - until the Week chart. Overall, though, it is closer to a pure structural failure event than a transportation event.
