RESEARCH Historic Chilean earthquakes

by Jim Eshelman
In the Wikipedia article on "List of earthquakes in Chile," I found a list of 124 historic earthquakes from 6.3 magnitude to 9.5. I've eliminated the nine quakes below 7.0, leaving 113 events. [ADDED 9/16/15: I've added an 8.3 quake, raised to 114.] Here are the 113 events with location (where specified), local date, local time, magnitude, longitude and latitude of epicenter, and death toll (where given):

It's going to take a while to move through these. My immediate plan is, for each one, to list close planetary angularities in three variations of lunar ingresses: (A) The Caplunar. (B) The immediate lunar ingress of the week. (C) The most recent weekly lunar ingress that isn't dormant. In this case, "close" means within 3° of the main angles, and within 2° of minor ones (each measured in the appropriate reference circle). As an aside, I'll also list Moon conjunctions, oppositions, and squares within 3°.

Consolidating results

by Jim Eshelman
The 20th century entries are almost exactly double the number for all other time periods. This allows the data to be broken into three groups, in case internal checking is desirable; though the final result we want is the total of all three groups (all 113 events).
Average expectancy for angularity within these orbs is one-ninth (40 out of 360), so for these 113 events the expectancy is 12.6 (if we give no separate credit for dormant charts). We would like to see numbers at least 6.5 different from this, i.e., 19 or higher, or 6 or lower, to pass the 5% level of significance. Moon aspects within these orbs have an expected occurrence of one-fifteenth (24 out of 360), so for these 13 events an average expectancy for each possible Moon aspect is 7.5. We would like to see numbers at least 5.2 different from this, i.e., 13 or higher, or 2 or lower, to pass the 5% level of significance.
CAPLUNAR:

I want to recalculate how everything performed after excluding dormant charts for the first two categories. This is an entirely reasonable approach considering how dormancy has expressed itself in the working of Sidereal solar and lunar ingresses. For this approach, sample size of the three categories are:
A. Caplunars: 113 events - 24 dormant charts = 89
B. Chart of the week: 113 events - 39 dormant charts = 74
C. Most recent non-dormant lunar ingress: 113 events
ANGULARITY: Average expectancy for is 1/9.
MOON ASPECTS: Average expectancy for is 1/15.
CAPLUNAR:
ANGULARITY: For 89 events, the expectancy is 9.9. The 95% confidence level is achieved when more than 5.8 different from this, i.e., 16 or higher, or 4 or lower. MOON ASPECTS: For 89 events, the expectancy is 5.9. The 95% confidence level is achieved when more than 4.6 different from this, i.e., 11 or higher, or 1 or lower.
Moon 16, Sun 20, Mercury 9, Venus 6, Mars 17, Jupiter 16, Saturn 14, Uranus 13, Neptune 23, Pluto 15
Moon-Sun 5, Moon-Mercury 6, Moon-Venus 5, Moon-Mars 6, Moon-Jupiter 5, Moon-Saturn 5, Moon-Uranus 7, Moon-Neptune 7, Moon-Pluto 5
CHART OF THE WEEK:
ANGULARITY: For 74 events, the expectancy is 8.2. The 95% confidence level is achieved when more than 5.3 different from this, i.e., 14 or higher, or 3 or lower. MOON ASPECTS: For 74 events, the expectancy is 4.9. The 95% confidence level is achieved when more than 4.2 different from this, i.e., 9 or higher, or 0.
Moon 10, Sun 14, Mercury 10, Venus 11, Mars 8, Jupiter 9, Saturn 17, Uranus 7, Neptune 7, Pluto 12
Moon-Sun 5, Moon-Mercury 6, Moon-Venus 1, Moon-Mars 4, Moon-Jupiter 5, Moon-Saturn 8, Moon-Uranus 8, Moon-Neptune 8, Moon-Pluto 4
MOST RECENT NON-DORMANT:
ANGULARITY: For 113 events, the expectancy is 12.6. The 95% confidence level is achieved when more than 6.5 different from this, i.e., 19 or higher, or 6 or lower. MOON ASPECTS: For 113 events, the expectancy is 7.5. The 95% confidence level is achieved when more than 5.2 different from this, i.e., 13 or higher, or 2 or lower.

We may draw some conclusions from these numbers.
CAPLUNARS
For the "Master Chart of the Month," Neptune is not only decisively the most angular planet, it is significantly so. If all 113 charts are counted, Neptune comfortably exceeds the 95% confidence level. If only non-dormant Caplunars are counted, Neptune's mathematical significance skyrockets: 4.4 standard deviations from mean expectancy.
However, excluding the dormant Caplunars produces a further result that is anomalous within astrology. In addition to the Sun (which is just barely above the 2 sigma level), excesses of Mars and Jupiter become significant. The Jupiter score is questionable. Astrology fares better if we consider all 113 charts (of which 24 have nothing closely angular at all) than if we exclude the dormant charts.
Venus is the least angular planet. If we include all 113 charts, it is significantly so (being outside the 95% range). If we exclude dormant charts, the expected frequency is lowered enough that the Venus infrequency would no longer be sufficiently anomalous to warrant attention.
No Moon aspects are sufficiently anomalous to warrant attention.
I conclude that, at a statistically significant level, Neptune is frequent and Venus infrequent in Caplunars preceding Chilean earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher, and that the best way to process these data is to include dormant Caplunars in the mix.
CHART OF THE WEEK
In Sidereal mundane astrology, the most descriptive solar or lunar ingress charts are the lunar ingresses immediately preceding an event. These are casually called "the chart of the week."
Saturn is clearly the most frequently angular planet in these charts for these events. If dormant charts are excluded, Saturn's frequency is statistically significant (and, again, the Sun is just barely significant as well), In this case, the better results are obtained by excluding dormant charts from the calculations, thus lowering our expectation of Saturn's angularity. However, Saturn is clearly the most angular planet in either approach.
Moon-Venus aspects are nearly absent - only 1 occurrence - and, if all 113 charts are considered, this infrequency is significant. There is also a tendency of Moon aspects to Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune to be most common, though the frequency of these aspects does not reach a statistically significant threshold.
I conclude that Saturn, at a statistically significant level, is frequent the weekly Sidereal lunar ingresses immediately preceding Chilean earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher, and Moon-Venus aspects are significantly infrequent. U observe a lesser tendency, consistent with astrology's tenets and what has been observed otherwise in Sidereal mundane astrology, for Moon aspects to Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune in these charts.
MOST RECENT NON-DORMANT:
When the most recent weekly lunar ingress is dormant, a phenomenon named flow-through has been observed that permits the most recent non-dormant lunar ingress to persist. Therefore, we studied the most recent non-dormant weekly Sidereal lunar cardinal ingress for these 113 quakes. By definition, none of these were dormant, so we have the entire 113 events in play.
Saturn is easily the most frequent angular planet, and its frequency is statistically significant. This is the same result as with the chart of the week above, but the excess is much larger, suggesting that the most recent non-dormant lunar ingress shows purer (less compromised) results than simply taking the most recent lunar ingress.
The two least frequent Moon aspects are to Venus and Jupiter, astrology's classic benefics. This matches the significantly low occurrence of Moon-Venus aspects in Caplunars. However, the infrequency does not reach a statistically significant level (here taken as the 95% level). The most common lunar aspect is to Uranus, again something seen in the Caplunars and, again, not reaching the statistically significant level.
SUMMARY OF OBSERVATIONS & CONCLUSIONS
For these events:
In the Caplunar, Neptune is the most frequent, and Venus the least frequent, angular planet.
In the "chart of the week" (immediately prior Sidereal lunar cardinal ingress), Saturn is the most frequent angular planet and Moon-Venus aspects are significantly infrequent.
There is a lesser tendency for Moon aspects to Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune in these charts.
The Sun seems to have a persistent role in these events, being excessively present just within thresholds of statistical significance.
Flow-through again appears to be an actuality: Results are of the same type, but much greater significance, when the most recent non-dormant lunar ingress is examined, rather than just the most recent lunar ingress.
There is a tendency for Moon aspects to Venus and Jupiter to be infrequent, and Moon aspects to Uranus to be somewhat frequent, in the lunar ingresses. For the Caplunar, this reaches a level of statistical significance.

I discussed it in the book
Sidereal Mundane Astrology.
First, Neptune is god of earthquakes! That's as pure a mythological attribution as if we said Mars is god of war.
Second, earthquakes coincide with the single most characteristic Neptune trait in mundane astrology: people are emotionally shaken up, disturbed, excited, anxious, etc. Even with small, harmless quakes, Neptune coincides with the "everybody got really excited and anxious for a few minutes" experience.
With really large quakes, the Neptune traits expand. For example, there is disorientation, confusion, breakdowns in communication, and more. There is certainly the "what comes next?" state of mind.
Finally, after really large quakes, the ground is sufficiently unstable that, for weeks or months after, people actually get seasick on land!
Read the Neptune section in Appendix A in
SMA for more, as well as the Earthquakes chapter.
