Pluto in Leo
(Based on Bradley:) A "cycle of social and governmental experimentation in the handling of masses of people in general and mobs of persons in particular." Emphasis on authoritarian aspects of government, wielding superiority over populations, and the need of the masses and even government "to strike back viciously at so-called better classes of people within the social structure." Challenges against, and struggles with, autocracy and imperialism.

(Bradley, AA Digest 1969, a hindsight assessment:) "[Pluto leaving Leo] marks the end of a cycle of social and governmental experimentation in the handling of masses of people in general and mobs of persons in particular. During Pluto's reign in Leo the emphasis was on the authoritarian aspects of the idea of government - the need to wield superiority over populations, the need to strike back viciously at so-called better classes of people within the social structures, the need to sell out God Himself if need be, to further the cause of His kingdom in a political sense. Pluto in Leo strives to make 'every man a king,' even if it takes purges, burnings and making pacts with the devil to achieve that end. Pluto in Leo represents those haughty and piously fraudulent attitudes which wonder why the peasants don't eat cake when there is a shortage of bread."

(Firebrace, Spica, April, 1966.) "I have read many articles which describe the action of Pluto in tropical Virgo. He is, of course, now in Sidereal Leo. If Pluto is, as I think, the planet which either begins or ends a stage, often by violent means, I think that we can attribute to him the many changes in sovereignty - a very Leo word - which have taken place in the last few years. Many nations have obtained independence and are now free. Many have suffered from revolution. Indeed, in the last two years in Africa alone there have been no less than nine revolutions which have upset the ruling power. Many are still being shaken by internal disturbance in the struggle for power. In fact, the present age is in a real sense the age of the struggle for independence and power. I trust that when Pluto passes into Virgo that a new phase in development will be ushered in."

1968-69 began a new wave of more radicalized feminism with especial focus on these related themes of work and health. Abortion was legalized in '73.

(Based on Bradley:) Equalization of peoples, a blurring and even erasure of differences between castes and classes.

In 1974, I observed in print, "As Uranus leaves Virgo, the maiden remains in Pluto's hands for a few more years. We know, then, that the current picture of Women's Lib, labor problems, and ecological concerns, as well as a reassessment of morals, will stay where it is... Pluto in Virgo, in brief, takes the entire world on a second trip through childhood with all of its misunderstandings and curiosities."

Pluto in Libra
The most identifiable period of the AIDS crisis: Pluto first entered Libra October 1981 and last left October 29, 1993, almost the exact period. (The infection arose under Neptune in Scorpio, but that wasn't the public awareness, its spread or the social impact.)

It was certainly much easier for The Powers That Be to force aggressive militarism while Pluto stayed in Scorpio. It first left Scorpio for Sagittarius in the last days of December 2005, and I circulated a prediction that the whole framework of how the world looked would be changed by New Years. In fact, January 2006 marked the first huge cracks in the W. machine.

Rising cultural waves rejecting or seeking to overthrow traditional Sagittarian themes, which in turn arouses retaliatory assertion or intensification of those ideas. The battlegrounds for these polarized struggles include the overthrow of cultural institutions in general; rejection of imperialism, elitism, economic disparity, abusive taxation, and traditional forms of religion, and academia (with consequent aggressive protection and re-assertion of these things). Efforts to overthrow existing culture (whether one's own culture or that of an enemy), generally rooted in religious fundamentalism, cutural chauvinism, or ideas of racial purity.

More positively, revolutionary developments in the areas of religion and philosophy. Historically, substantial investment in education, and very substantial advances in energy production (primarily for far-reaching travel and exploration, imperialism and exploitation, and the support of commerce through greater energy production). Science supporting more industrial power and laying the foundation for broader and faster travel.

Examples: Participation in organized religion is at an all-time low in this country, with increased disidentification with it. We also have an up-and-coming generations of young adults with little regard for authority, institutionalism, or even expertise. Internet "crowd sourcing" of opinions reflects a rejection of historic established expertise. Accelerated international radicalism, specifically a growing Islamist threat with a desire to overthrow other culture's cultural and religious institutions combined with out-and-out beliefism. Divisions in our own Congress, similarly, have become increasingly belief-driven in their rigidity, each side perceiving itself as the radicals and saviors. Trump Administration turning large numbers against mainstream news sources and science.

Harsher, struggling, dystopian: people doubt they will regain guarantees of safety or security from violence, economic crisis, or cultural breakdown. Autonomous self-sufficiency, struggle for survival. Need to preserve and restore survivability of the planet. Shortages of land, secure living space, and privacy (territorial conflicts). Hunger and dwelling insecurity. People determining anew how they want to be governed. Control vs. being controlled. Increased social isolation and focus on survival (anticipating breakdown of society or survivability of the world with depleting stability and resources). Intensified tensions between individual survival vs. connected wider community, and between uplifted and controlling classes vs. the debased and controlled classes. Breakdown of old structures and outmoded patterns. Bedrock financial institutions are challenged and reassessed. New economies emerge, including a structural reconceiving of work, jobs, employment, and earnings. Anything father-themed comes under attack (and retaliates). Ancient grievances and resentments are renewed. Society's relationship to aging and the aged will change necessarily. Revolution in pharmacology.

(Bradley:) Both "dawn of a new era" and extreme polarization, too much A vs. B and not enough compromise and collaboration.
(Based on Bradley:) Chauvinistic focus on black and white, right and wrong, patriotism or treason, true blue and sinister red, fanaticism or atheism, whole hog or none. The big issues, such as civil rights, uncivil wrongs, the position of Red China, the space race, and the generation gap, were characterized by a religious kind of blind side-taking. Thinking in terms of extremes only, not the picture as a whole,

Neptune in Scorpio
Paranoia, distrust of power, nuclear fears, suppressing presidential power concentrations post-Watergate, etc. The AIDS crisis emerged in the last couple of years of this.

(Based on Bradley:) Periods when a single individual (e.g., Napoleon) dominates an era and sets its tone. "Machiavellian strongman" with populist support and that "intellectuals rightly fear."

In 1974, I wrote: "The "new' morality," excesses in drug abuse, and concentration on sexuality have generally been blamed on Neptune in Scorpio, both by tropicalists and siderealists. Actually, as anyone who knows sidereal Scorpio can testify, the natives of that sign are much too impulsive and emotionally withdrawn where the softer feelings are concerned to be considered en masse as highly amorous. Much of this reputation stems from tropical Scorpio, which is sidereal Libra. Now, as Uranus moves into the true palace of Aphrodite's charms, we can hope for widespread public sex education in a complete and responsible manner. Base erotica will fade away, to be replaced by an open, natural attitude toward the human form in the proper place. After all, Uranus is always after the naked truth wherever it goes, and the bare facts are what must be produced. Point blank. Only by properly educating our public with honest information on human sexuality can we expect to clear our streets of those psychologically crippled individuals who spend their time forcing unsolicited perversities upon the uninitiated often in a violent, criminal manner."

Neptune in Sagittarius
Themes of accelerated wealth inequity, politicization of religions and religious institutions, and increase class and institutional elitism.

The arising of "helicopter parents" with social and practical shifts in public education: Besides the symbolism of Neptune impact on education there are the inflated themes of entitlement, specialness, elevated importance with the general sense of erosion of education traditions and pedagogic discipline.

Neptune in Capricorn
From nearly the beginning of that passage, security became the primary theme of our lives. Security foundations were threatened or challenged. Whether the constant fear-mongering from a White House that ruled through terror for six years, or the computer industry where "security issues" (viruses etc.) ballooned and become a main feature of computer use, or whatever - "security" as a theme (meaning, insecurity as a reality) became most people's day-to-day baseline. A time of intentionally intensified fear, fostered by governments as control.

Neptune in Aquarius
Suppressed or diffused social progressiveness, squashed rebellions, deranged concepts of liberty, all setting the stage for a future conflict or breakthrough after the transit is over. Imagined new vistas and possibilities without current capacity to reach or manage them. Roused socialist-leaning liberalism. Failure of universalism, futurism, or true enlightenment to flourish. Shortage of dispassionate clarity, fostered ignorance.

This transit reflects living in a time when most people feel like we are living in a science fiction wonderland, "imagining the inconceivable." Change happens so fast, technical progress accelerating far beyond any vision prior generations had to the 21st century (provided it doesn't involve transportation). One aspect of this is increased complexity with life changing faster than neurology can grasp, manage, and keep up. It has fostered technological surveillance and loss of privacy.

Pivotal, bloody war (likely of world scale) coexisting with erupting, flourishing, inseminating, liberating enlightenment. - Disruption of peace (perhaps shockingly violent). Changes in international relationships, realigning of alliances. - Spirit of rebellion rejects existing authoritarianism and autocracy. - An era of social, personal, and philosophical enlightenment that demands personal, democratic freedom. - Flourishing and patronage of the arts (crafted arts, architecture, literary and theatrical arts); a new avant-garde wave. - Increased liberty and understanding regarding sex and reproduction, shifting social values, increased sexual activity and awareness, refreshed sense of sexual liberty, increase in fertility, restoration of reproductive rights. - Landmark scientific breakthroughs that cascade forward, permanently altering scientists' understanding of (and process in exploring) nature. - Reorientations in philosophy and institutional religion marked by a spirit of awakening: a new spirit of reason penetrating formal religion. - Ends with a "fresh new world" sense.

I expected rebellion especially in areas of religion, nationalism, and other group identification, including a massive turn against religion. We got this combined with intensification of belief-driven motives. Large cultural and population migrations have occurred during the same time (Uranus in Pisces as diaspora itself).

A volatile time politically. Issues of economics, government, and accelerated armament. Great challenges to the stability of existing alliances: Acute polarization splits former allies (individuals, social groups, or nations) along new axes. Widespread dissatisfaction fuels repudiation of historic closely held views and values. Each such era, while people are passing through it, feels like a transitions between a concluding old cycle and an opening new cycle.

An unyielding, unremitting sense of emergency exists, then autocratic governance increases. Extraordinary autocratic power is yielded (voluntarily granted) to national leaders, who acquire increasing dominion of economic and social issues. Armament, safety, going one's way alone without the encumbrances of alliances... these win out over the demand for personal liberty and social equality. The masses seem more comfortable with an authoritarian father figure to "make everything OK." Absent a state of war, there me be a suspension of checks and balances on autocracy normal to martial law.

Increased polarization and struggle between opposing extremes - each historic period has its own example, whether it be arising fascism vs. socialism (or political elements that, if more extreme, would have emerged as overtly fascist or socialist, extremism of right vs. left), opposing views on slavery, Catholic vs. Protestant wars, etc. Economics (especially trade) are unstable, in a precarious balance. Economics policies become more nationalistic and autistic, increasingly protective, to defend against trade inequities and competition imbalances. Extreme unrest in economically hurting populations.

(Gasoline shortage, higher prices, long waits at stations, 55 mph national speed limit.)

In a 1974 forecast, I anticipated, "Much will now be heard of limiting the power of the press. Wiretapping may come almost to an end as new regulations and restrictions are placed upon it. Child day-care centers will get more of the economic knife than before, while the problems of school segregation tear much of the educational system from stem to stern. Saturn in Gemini calls for the dismissal of earlier treaties, probably to make way for the formation of new alliances [combing Saturn in Gemini with Uranus in Libra]. Diplomatic ties are broken, as nations withdraw their ministers from each others' soil. A reticent attitude surrounds all attempts to negotiate or bargain for compromise until the Greater Malefic moves on to sidereal Cancer."

(National struggle with redefining cultural vision of marriage, climaxing in same-sex marriage rights.)

Accelerated national struggle with violence and hatred, with intensified attention on race-issue violence, reassessment of police violence, and our new "one slaughter a day" diet of mass killings. Sociologically, a generalized acute shortage of power, with parties on all sides equally feeling powerless and, thus, overcompensating. A kind of primitization of the species occurring in the sense that survival needs are under assault and, therefore, are asserting themselves with increased vigor.

Saturn in Sagittarius
(Based on Bradley.) Restriction on long-distance transportation (e.g., international vacations), religions, etc. Resurgence of fundamentalism, renewed emphasis on celibacy, poverty vows, etc. Blockades for those using a pulpit for social reform issues. Negative impact on peerage, balance of social affluence changes hands, a hard time for those of privileged classes. Restrictions on judges and courts. Inflated academic costs (college-debt crisis).

Saturn in Capricorn anticipates individual and political struggles for survival, autonomy, and self-sufficiency, shortages of land and secure space, the Earth retaliating against abuses of land and water, hunger and dwelling issues, vast economic (primarily financial) institutional management and restructuring especially favoring capitalism, the arising of rebellion religions, focus on how we manage and respond to fear, and focus on disabilities and misfortune.

Land & space: Territorial acquisitions and annexations, ecological concerns regarding climate change, mineral rights or mining conflicts. Walls, embargos, spatial segregation, splitting off historically separate countries into autonomous nations, Congressional redistricting. Earth & water crises: Land- and water-based planetary retaliations against destabilizing climate change, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, no-warning fire outbreaks; water and land rights and conservation. Hunger and food-security (including famine, crop failures). Further crumbling of farming as a viable livelihood. Hunger may be weaponized, or it may be addressed aggressively. Earth-mindful rebellion religions will thrive, including renewal and empowerment of paganism. Major financial movements & developments, changes in how we collectively take control of money and commerce including bedrock foundations, controls, and financial restructuring. Bedrock financial institutions intended to further money security and certainty in trade come into being. Long-standing economic hardship and social disenfranchisement boil over. "Inferiority" (so-called) will rise to higher visibility. Disability and genetic bigotry. Widespread civil liberties conflicts and civil rights resistance activism. Relief from the arts and laughter.

Democratizing power, rebelling against restriction, fighting for freedom. The masses rise against tyranny. A surging anti-imperial, anti-authoritarian wave with new constitutions, pivotal elections, social unrest, marches, riots, civil wars and other wrestling for liberty (with predictable resistance and push-back). Optimistic for voting rights and historic gains in racial equity. Liberal social reforms and economics, likely including universal health care and continued Keynesian policies. Free trade breaks economic bottlenecks. Democratizing commerce as an innovative force, creating new markets. Science, invention, and technology thrive (technology stocks win). Medical science breakthroughs, especially in genetic medicine. Traditional medicine flourishes as brilliant science meets a more enlightened, practical model of delivering health care. Water rights and other pipeline issues are increasingly important. Agnosticism and atheism become stronger social forces. Pragmatic futurism in diverse forms.

Saturn in Pisces
Observation: In July 1995, Saturn briefly dipped into Pisces from Aquarius. During this time two events stand out: (1) Iraq threatened to end all cooperation with weapons inspectors if sanctions weren't lifted. Hussein's son-in-law defected. Hussein then revealed new, threatening information about the extend of Iraq's biological and nuclear weapons program. (2) In Bosnia, the Srebrenica massacre occurred.

(Based on Bradley:) Blocking, suppressing, resisting, and limiting military action and other aggression, often providing opportunities to pursue peace, though often with stubborn blocks that preserve a stalemate for the time.

(Bradley:) "Aries is the sign of commerce, the ups and downs of the world of barter and trade... the sign par excellence of capitalism... Whenever Saturn sallies through the stars of the Golden Fleece, the smug, snug business world gets a good drubbing from within its own ranks."

In presidential election years, results in the election of a figure of enormous gravitas, generally regarded as an iconic figure (at least within their distinctive parties - the kind of name that is drawn on and used for decades as a symbol) - a nearly dynastic feel, even when not literally true. Their unusual enormity stands out. [Obvious exception: Bush 2; but maybe Kerry had even less gravitas than Bush!]

Jupiter was parading through Libra in those first two years after V-J Day when so man of us were uplifted and made optimistic about the chartered course of the newly formed United Nations organization. The first stages of the Space Age, 1958ish or so, also coincided with a the-sky's-the-limit sunburst of world-wide daydreaming of a better future for humanity.
